I know most of you use Linux servers but I am curious to here your pros and cons between the two.

I have both but tend to use windows for my larger sites.

Ive never used a windows server before, and never will. All you have to do is say "windows" and I'm the fuck out.

have never used Windows servers before either, the main difference is - Linux supports PHP (which is the best server-side scripting language) compared with Windows servers that mainly run with ASP (which is sucksss)
They both can be used on either platform. Everyone bitches about Windows servers because they see others doing it... Try working with them daily, they have very little issues (including as web servers), its anything 3rd party you stick on there which is likely to cause a problem.

yes u probably right, but this is the prevailing opinion about both,
Linux mainly would serve PHP programmers and Windows - ASP, and there is no argue that PHP is better so ...

I'd say it all depends on what you want to do with the system... there's no "better" choice without considering what you're even using the system for.

But if it's a server.. linux wins hands down.

I knew this topic would create a little controversy.

Well, you can run PHP on a windows Dedicated. I don't deal much in PHP (only ASP). Only thing I like about my Linux is running wordpress and the ability to run so many different formats. Where as windows you have to kind of stick with them on it.

Love Plesk though on my Windows

You're an idiot.

I do web server support for a living. Every Windows server I have ever worked on has PHP installed.

As to the original question, it really depends on what you're developing for. As the above idiot has already stated, ASP is pretty much Windows-only, as is MSSQL. Also, Frontpage and Microsoft Expressions tend to work better on Windows servers (although they will work on Linux servers with the correct plugins). Aside from that, as I pointed out to the aforementioned idiot, nearly every scripting language is platform agnostic. Perl, python, ruby, they'll all run on anything.

The reason why you see so many Linux servers is because most Linux distros are free. They're also slightly more customizable, and have less overhead compared to a Windows server OS.

If anybody tells you that Linux is more secure, punch them in the dick. It all depends on how it's set up and who is running it (not to mention how many idiots are on the server. Even if you have the most secure server in the world, all it takes is one idiot to set a web-accessible directory to 777 and there goes everything).

From an end-user perspective, you're not going to notice any real differences.

Linux, Linux, Linux.

That being said, if you aren't use with server administration & more use to the Point & Click control.. Windows is your answer.

If you are asking the question, which solution is best - most people will side with Linux, however the REAL question is.. what answer is the best for you?

Wordpress and Plesk can run on both Windows and Linux.

 Just keep your yap shut.

you're a fucking asshole, what i was saying is exactly the same,

From my experience, Linux has been more stable, reliable, and functional for my needs. It requires fewer restarts, shows less quirky crashes, and otherwise keeps on chugging for eye catching uptime.

I think it'll really depend on what type of server you are planning to deploy , I used both windows and linux as my servers. Satisfied with both at their own positions.

Signs you're dealing with a server noob.

They use words like 'stable' when referring to Linux
They don't think IIS can run anything but ASP
They don't know apache can run on windows
They don't know that IIS7 can give you 100% compatibility for mod_rewrite
They don't know that Plesk can run just fine on windows

But the biggest sign that you may have a faggot webserver noob: They have to ask which is better without specifying the actual use of the server or business need that is to be solved.
