Won't having good content and then ads to monitize contradict eachother?

We all know that the recent animal updates had forced everyone to work a little more than before. I actually got into IM after the second update so I dont know much about the spamming techniques that made everyone rich in years prior to 2011. They still happen of course but I would say it's turning into an art i.e. not everyone can get away with it.

On to my question about good content. The previous method was to somehow divert the traffic towards clicking the ads because the content your website was designed to keep them unsatisfied thereby convincing them to look elsewhere for their information via clicking an ad link- hence generating you a profit.

How will it work now? If I have good content and will provide enough information for them to stick around longer, wouldn't the presence of ads be counter intuitive? Good content should mean that the person would be coming back to your site for "authentic" information about whatever your site is about so having ads for them to drift away to wouldn't make sense.

Yeah, that's good thinking. You are right about that. You will be working against your own efforts for on-page metrics like time-on-site, bounce rate, etc. So maybe you'll want to slang your own product instead, off of your own site? I don't think skewing these metrics is going to hurt you that bad. If your content is so good that this would be a concern, it should be making up for the fact by snagging you tons of legit links and social shares and more traffic. Sounds like the issue is with the monetization method here.

Honestly, Adsense is the lowest form of monetization in my book.

You are correct, if you are providing great, helpful content, why would you display ads for your competitors?

I don't know what niche you are in. But I think the best way to monetize a blog these days is to build up your email list and social media following. Every once in awhile promote a blog post of yours that includes an affiliate link to something related to your niche, but not a direct competitor to your own site.

Hope that helps!

There are ways to monetize your site without even showing ads. You just have to be creative and take a different approach than the typical model of building a site and then littering it with ads.

One thing I've learned in this space is that it's all about creativity and thinking outside the box. Shoot me a PM if you want and I can offer some more advice.
