Woo Hoo first profit day

quick update. since my intitial post on 4/26, i have been steadily in the black, not hugely but still a nice place to be. yes this is the going at your own pace approach. keep in mind i do have a day job and a family so i don't have hours and hours to spend on this.

on the campaign that is working, i have spent around $27 on adsense and made about $35 over these last 3 weeks (+29%). i won't be retiring early on that but at least we can be pretty confident that the "first profit day" was not a fluke now.

in the last 7 days i spent $6 to make $10 (+67%).

my actual overall profit is somewhat less since i screwed up trying a new niche and lost about $3 in one day, got surprised by the number of hits my adsense got, luckily converted at 40%, but unluckily the payout was shit. so i spent like $5 in adsense and made $2 back on about 100 adsense clicks.

sooner or later i will be back even overall. i have spent almost $70 in adwords since i began doing this at the beginning of march. and i have made back just over $50 (-29%). so i am less than $20 in the hole overall. i guess that doesn't include the $5 I spent to sign up for adwords (i guess i could have avoided that had i known better).

i have been trying to figure out where to go from here. as mentioned i tried a new niche which has not worked out, i'm going to try and tinker with the page more time and see if i can get higher paying ads.

i also found a new niche which has huge paying ads but we'll see if i can figure out how to get traffic to it. that page should be online by the end of this weekend so we'll see how that goes.

the other long term plan is maybe to build a real site in the niche that is currently working and see if i can learn enough about seo to get some real organic traffic to it. that should be educational.

also i need to do more forum spamming and comment spamming etc. which i've been too busy to do. also i'm trying to learn more about automated methods of getting this stuff done without doing too much work.

i think illkity's advice did help, i lowered my bids from .09 to .06, raised my daily budget to $10 and checked "show ads as accelerated as possible" or whatever it is. i don't actually spend anywhere near $10 but i think i get better results. i do get lots of clicks this way, and spend less for them.

but interestingly, in the successful niche the cost of content network was quite a bit higher than the cost of search network. i hadn't seen that happen before. personally i think it's a nobrainer that the search network is more valuable, but i guess if enough people are opting for content thinking it will be cheaper, then eventually it will get more expensive. the market in action i guess.

Hey, you're doing a lot better than I was. I spent around 300 a month to get 250 back. I've dropped over 1000 in adwords, now at about 100 a day. Problem is, I can't get 1 click from 100 a day, and barely any impressions. Not sure if my keywords suck, or whatever else - but I can't seem to get the content network to work at all.

But anyway, congrats on positive results. Doing better than me ;)

That, in itself is an accomplishment.

Imagine standing on a street corner, trading $6 for $10, all day long. I'd do it all day!

Yeah, think about it... the clickers who find you in the search pages are looking for what you have. The ones in the content network, where your ads show up on other sites, are a lot less targeted. They're still surfing and searching.

Keep it up pal, you're on the right track.

Hey after 2 months of this crap I've finally had a day of profit, $1.74 ... I've been lurking not posting but wanted to say thanks for this site, everybody.

I'm posting just to offer encouragement to the frustrated, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been very conservative, maybe that's why it's taken me so long but I don't want to lose too much money. So in the process of learning my total adwords spend in two months has been only $36.40, and my total adsense income is $14.59.

Yesterday I spent $1.21 on adsense and made $2.95.

Of course that is probably a fluke but I've definitely been closer to breaking even the last week or so and the trend is definitely toward being in the black.

The big change I think that made the difference was a few careful forum postings I made, which I hadn't done before, I had been just trying to make adwords work by itself. But the forum postings worked bigtime.

The campaign that's working is a single page, semi-decent content, sort of an arbi page but decent enough that i don't feel bad about linking to it in a forum. I have a few other pages too that I should probably forget about.

I have been about to give up on this over the past few weeks, but now I'm back in the game, hehe.

By the way i still have almost the whole $25 in my 7search account, that has not been very helpful to me, can't seem to make that work anywhere near as well as adwords. For me, it has sucked.

hey,

Look at the buck and change as a start. Last week, I posted that I took action and on my first day of profit, it was only .02! Well, that was of of adsense only. I added Yahoo Search Mkt, Adcenter and Adwords and now I am getting about .58/day average. Because the niche is rather thin, my Adsense profit per click isnt that great, but its a start. The whole idea was for me to be able to say to myself that i was actually in there doing SOMETHING! Now, you just have to do some tweaking on whatever you are doing to create a greater profit.

Secondly, watch the attitude that you hold. Reading the original post, I see words like "this crap" and "only". Now, I am not saying that you have to be a big positive person, but you do have to be the first one to see your business as a BUSINESS before anyone else does. I had family laughing at my .02 profit last week and the 2.39 today. Who is willing to see the long term, me or them? I know that alll I have to do is replicate my action a few times over and I will be in Jon's position. Wish you the best!

This is kind of interesting, although it's tough to tell what's a coincidence and what's real sometimes.

Over the weekend I was screwing around with some new niches, and making a lot of changes to things, doing housekeeping on my adwords account as well as making new keywords for new niches.

I was disappointed to see that over the following few days I had paid for about 14 clicks on my GOOD page, the one that makes me a buck a day, but had no clicks. Something was wrong, since my CTR on that page averages well, not 50% but close. I had done something to break my page somehow.

I realized that in my housekeeping, I had deleted the custom channel for the ad on that page, since I never use it. I have only one ad on that page so I prefer to use the url channel as it's just easier to remember. So i deleted the custom channel, which was still in the code for the ad on my page. I guessed maybe that had fucked it up somehow, maybe that created a bug.

Anyway I made a new ad code for the page, without a custom channel, reloaded the page. And guess what, today I have 1 impression, and my first click of the week which was (coincidentally?) the highest paid click i've ever gotten.

Anyway, a big relief because i was very sad my "good" page was not working.

This is a lesson I am slowly learning. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING unless absolutely necessary, you never know what will happen. Of course, you have to take chances, but don't make uneccessary changes that have no real upside. Like just making stuff "neater", do not do that shit.

I really, really cannot agree with you here. The only way to see if something works unless you change something.

If you'd said "if something is working and you're thinking of changing it for no real reason, not to test or to experiment or anything of the sort, but just because you're anal or stupid, then DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING", then I might've agreed.
