Has anyone used both and know which one is better. I'm trying platinum seo on one of my blogs and it doesn't seem much different.

There is also Yoast's wordpress seo plugin plus more. The better question would be what are you trying to accomplish?

There are no penalties caused by wordpress in and of itself that I am aware of. The only issue you may run into is dupe content, which at most will get some of your content tossed into the supplimental index.

My tool of choice to correct this is headspace, which allows you to noindex/nofollow/noarchive the various duplicate (and often times uneccessary) pages wordpress creates - tag pages, archives, etc.

I do notice tags getting their own pages, and I do have a lot of tags, I will look for this headspace, thx

Another great plugin to help control some of the dupe issues (tag / category archive / author archives / etc..) is Robots Meta, It will actually disable the different archives if you wish to do so.

I always thought that tag pages and stuff were good for helping interlink your site?

I agree that they are good for interlinking, but if you have all the different "archives" enabled you end up with a ton of dupe content all over the place and a lot of extra interlinking that isn't really necessary. Additionally, if you are using something to show related posts, your site will be interlinked by relevance anyway. I don't think that all the archives are bad altogether, I just think most of it is un-necessary and redundant. One thing that I have had happen in the past when I just started with wordpress is to have a tag or category page rank instead of the actual post that the content came from, which is irritating to say the least. What I usually do with Robots meta plugin is to disable every archive except one (usually the tag archive) and set it to no-index, follow. That way it still interlinks but doesn't hijack my serps (seems to have worked so far in this respect anyway)

I never thought about the potential dupe content, so thanks for that and the tip about disabling most of the archives.
