Last year I went surfing in Morocco with a couple friends so of course we had to take the cheapest flight there. 4 hours of agony as my head stuck above the headrest... couldn't get more than a couple minutes of sleep... not worth it.. also the pain in the fucking knees. Frequent travelers use the automated kiosks to check in, because they are smart enough to never check baggage. Those kiosks offer upgrades on most domestic flights for $50-70.
Pro tip: paying for the upgrade will put you in the priority TSA line, which when the airport is really backlogged and you're running late, can be worth every penny for the last minute upgrade.
Oh shit, I never knew that was a bump to 1st class. I always thought it was "business class" that was just peasant class with more legroom... but now that I think about it most domestic flights only have 2 types of seats so an "upgrade" would have to be to the 1st class cabin.
Actually in the case of Virgin America flights, the "business" class option of Main Cabin Select is generally worth the extra $20/seat, even if it's not quite as nice as the proper 1st class.

6" more leg room
Yes the seats are the regular size, with 3 people wide, but I never had all of the seats taken, so it was easy to just put up an arm rest and give myself more room.
Mind you I only ever peasanted out for flights from SFO to LAS. Probably costs more on longer flights.
