whats stranger, police having riot gear, crowd control devices, and gas masks at a PEACEFUL protest or the protesters equipping themselves with the same gear to defend themselves against tear gas?

meh. I think it's all ok. Anyone familiar with mob mentality knows that you can have days and days of peaceful gatherings and it can still get fatal in about 30 seconds.

Tens of thousands throughout the nation in various cities, blocking important ports, business districts, etc... didn't take much more than that for the bombs to start flying in Libya.
