My kids xbox 360 slim broke over the weekend. No damn clue where to get it fixed (or if I should). My guess is it's the motherboard (freezing on start up or a few minutes in... can't even get to playing a game).

It's out of warranty (by 22 days).

So I figure I've got a couple choices and a few of you ass hats might know the answer :)

1.) Send it to microsoft.

2.) Send it to one of these repair xbox places I found on-line (scary option since I'm sure half of them or more are just kids in the basement of their mom's house).

3.) Buy another one and swap out the HD. He's got the 250 gig HD, his big concern is losing his profiles, and all that crap. Can he swap out the HD with any other xbox 360 slim? The arcade version? Can he buy one with out a HD?

I should note before anyone says anything about just buying him a new xbox that this entire thing is a money lesson. He buys his own games, the xbox he has, etc... He makes 'some' money on-line, and he's always got chores (that usually chooses not to do). This is on him and the lesson I'd like to teach him is that it's not always smart to drop bucks to buy a new one when something can get fixed or repaired.

Side note, I'll be taking the damn thing apart today and making sure the GPU is seated right, and there isn't something silly wrong in there like the fan being clogged. If the MB is out there for sale (looks like there are some for sale on e-bay but they are all in the U.K.) might just do it myself -- or at least help him do it.

off - I just sold my Xbox and I feel soooo bad for it.

Anyway, the best option for you it's the 3rd. But the cheapest and probably the most useful it's sending the console to some repairing places. It's must be cheap.

Im on my forth one. Every time I just went and bought another one, swapped what I needed and returned the rest.

Not sure this is such a great lesson to teach him. I showed my Gs little brother this trick and now he buys stuff from Grisliest and swaps it out for a new version.

Otherwise there are plenty of videos on you tube to repair it yourself.

This may sound sketchy, but check Craigslist. There are dudes in almost every city that do the repairs. This dude (in his basement) fixed mine + added a fancy external fan to prevent future issues.

Same thing happened to me with my first xbox, literally three days out of warranty.

Brother got me an elite for my birthday and I managed to get the previous one fixed through an RROD repair kit and gave it to him. Now the damn elite keeps crashing every so often.

Have you searched for common root causes of your issue?

When you replace a motherboard in a 360 it pretty much screws it up because the disc drive is set to work with the standard shipped motherboard, you have to do all sorts of flashing etc and there's a few different makes of drive used as well so it can get tricky matching them to the original.. For the effort involved it's probably better to just buy a new one, they're very temperamental and once you start getting those rrods and problems it's just not worth wasting the time.

Your user profile is stored on live servers, just your save games and stuff like that that's on the harddrive, if you take it out carefully then shouldn't be an issue, just don't do it when it's on/spinning ..

No clue on what the root cause is. I do know it's not the hard drive since it doesn't matter if it's removed - still freezes.

So the "BIG" question is can you swap out Harddrives?

What I mean by swapping out the HD's is could he buy the 4gig one and just switch out his harddrive?

If that's the case I might just "HELP" him a bit so I don't have to work on the damn thing :)

Apparently in a 4GB 360 there is no hardrive, it's just the 250GB version with a space left where that drive would go, so yes you could.

From the sounds of it you've got the black one. If so, either call the warranty department and offer the rep some great feedback (via survey or what not) if they can do you a huge favor and fix it under warranty. If not, I'd go to craigslist.

If it is the white one, it is almost a guarantee that it is a heating issue. This can be fixed for a few dollars. (you can also to "the towel trick" to see if this will fix it)

Ive had like 5 Xboxs, I kept buying used ones of the old model and kept getting the red ring. I finally just bought a brand new Xbox Slim (got a jewtastic deal for $180), should arrive today actually :) Nothing like refreshing stats and shooting people at the same time.

Your poor son is a victim of a shitty company, Microsoft is the only company that can keep cranking out shit poor products and people buy them over and over.

Well I took it apart tonight, cleaned it up, and put new gook between the cpu and the heatsink.... put it back together and no go.

So I guess it's off to microsoft or a local guy. Don't think I want to replace the motherboard myself just because of the flashing issues.

I got my new Xbox today and played for a few hours and I had my most profitable day ever, I need to dedicate more time to gaming I suppose.

Figured this was due a little update.... because it's super odd.

All I did the other day was put some thermal paste between the heatsink and and the cpu. When we put it back together it was still freezing with in 30 seconds. I figured the GPU component was bad.

Last night the boy I guess was just jonesing for him pew pew and he turned it on. Damn thing works fine, he played for hours.

Only thing I can think of is that whatever sensor tells it was overheating was 'stuck' or something.
