You Need A Budget

My evergreen solution to financial planning:

Make more money.

Owe the dentist?

Make more money.

Tax-man coming for you?

Make more money.

Leasing a much too expensive car?

Make more money.

The GUI is fantastic. And the tutorials let you get right into it.

I'm not crazy about the idea of writing down all my expenses but I may give it a shot because this software just looks so damn cool.

This is otherwise known as "living hand-to-mouth". No matter how much money you're making, if you're not controlling what happens after you make it, you are destined to forever be a wage-slave (yes, even if you own your own business).

I've bought it - I'm using two separate budgets for my business and personal, love it so far. Making spending decisions based on budgets rather than your bank account is great.

You definitely need the iphone / android app to get the most out of it though - it makes recording expenses a hell of a lot easier.

^ I know bro, I'm one Penguin update away from living like a peasent with an expensive watch.

I need something to put me on track. I am absolutely terrible with money/saving/budgeting/etc. I have no wife or kids so I view all money after bills as "play money". It's all mine. In fact, I am in the process of building my dream gaming rig even though I should probably sock the cash away for a rainy day.

I guess I live with the mindset that money is meant to be spent. And if it's going to make me more happy (such as buying my dream gaming pc), then I am going to spend it. Because, fuck it. That's why. I could get hit by a bus and die tommorow. Might as well live happy.

I make money. The bills get paid and I have food on the table. I'm not hurting for cash and I have very little debt these days when compared to others my age. I just suck with planning and saving. I never spend more than I make in any given month (I put nothing on credit, period.) ... but I really, really wish I was better with budgeting and long-term planning.

It's not conceptually difficult to set a plan, but making it happen is where some people (including me) fall down without some help.

It comes down to your relationship with money and your habits around it. If you've already got a good relationship/set of habits, that's great. However if you have a tendency to empty your bank account at the first sign of something exciting to do/shiny to buy, and then wonder why you're broke 6 months later, a tool like this is useful.

I can see where people falter. However, then it doesn't have anything to do with money and intelligence... but rather self control and discipline.

Perhaps give money to someone you trust every month. Tell them to only give it to you in case of emergencies. Seems easy enough?

Not necessary - awareness is all that's required for most people, and software like YNAB gives you that awareness.

If, having been made aware of where your money's going by tracking it, you still can't stop yourself from pissing it away, you have another problem altogether, and not one that some software can help you with.
