Fracking inspiring.

Really liking Gary’s ideas about bringing the mom and pop shop vibe online.

I envy the fact he was able to stand on the shoulders of his dad. A successful company was already there. He brought it into the modern era and pumped it full of steroids.

"People will rely on what other people say to make a purchase"

I hate it when people make this assumption.

I don't rely on my friends for advice on what to purchase etc....

....Because my friends are dumbasses

Gertex and I hooked up on skype last summer, and we both exchanged Gary Vaynerchuk video links while talking about how to monetize a community.

We were on the same wavelength.

I am one of those guys who still doesn't have a facebook account, and just got his first cell phone 3 months ago. But I know Gary is right. Social and open is the future. People are searching social networks more and more, and algorithmic results less and less.

Not sure SEO is dead, but people doing SEO with tactics out of an ebook that was old when it was published 4 years ago are falling behind the curve.

Re-read it

"People will rely on what other people say to make a purchase"

Also, it's implicit when he says people, that he doesn't mean every person at all times. He's generalizing.

I think it depends what you are looking for. I dont think i would ever use social to research or buy financial products, but i may use it to find a financial advisor.

I may use social to get recommendations on a new laptop, as well as recommendations for online retailers, but i would always check prices via search engines to be sure there wasnt a better deal going.

That is why Google make so much more than facebook.

Social is for... Social stuff more than buying. Its important but i think the money will remain in search, particularly with mobile.

I bought The Thank You Economy after watching this keynote.

Gary V has done it again, and literally after 2 minutes of tweeting him the dude wrote back immediately... he understands the game and is playing to win.

A lot can be learned from that speech and Gary's business model in general.

So am I.

That said. Loved the whole presentation. Really blows my mind to think of the future not in 2-3 years but 10 years.

The idea of permanent (and real) online identities is such a foreign concept to me it just blows my mind...

All my life I have always had a disposable web.

Oh sure I've got a facebook and twitter and all that, but I've also had countless handles, nicknames, usernames, logins, avatars, ids, and personas.

My generation (28) and Gen Y has a different struggle from the boomers because while the boomers are worried about privacy... Gen X and (to a lesser extent the younger parts of) Y is going to struggle with PERMANENCE.

The only problem with Gary is that he doesn't realise that almost no one has his magnetic hyper active personality or his work ethic. To top that off, he himself admitted that twitter and facebook are stealing all his time away with unimportant dribble instead of him actually doing his wine business and other projects. He said he is an entrepreneur at heart not a public speaker and guru and wants to go back to his roots.

He had a video I saw talking about the above and cutting down on social media in late 2010 that he made in a Sydney hotel room. It seems he pulled that video later as it cannot be found today. I guess he realised the money from gurudom and books is better then the wine money.

Sure build a brand, just use word of mouth - you better have a great product and responsive and effective customer support team. Don't let social media take time away from the activities that directly make you money.

Once you make some dough, have someone else do the social stuff and you concentrate on growing the brand and finding new angles and ways to steam-roll your competitors.

Fixed that for 'ya.

As someone who has been an advertiser and an affiliate I can safely say that most of the time letting affiliates get involved with the distro mix does not "build your brand" in the way that the term is commonly used. To build a brand you need to cultivate trust and meaningful relationships with your customers. Most affiliate programs are run in a manner which gives the affiliate a financial incentive to look for the cheapest, and therefore often the least meaningful/lasting, way of getting someone involved with a product.

Building a brand is about creating and demonstrating value in addition to being a steward of the concept/product. I can count on one hand the number of affiliates I would trust to actually promote a product that would want the general public to associate with my name/face.

You don't have to be Gary to be a success with a thank you economy approach.

Reach out and be decent to your clients. Make sure they know you give a damn about them, and you do, because if you don't they will wander from your business.

So many people hit me up for SEO help. Some are genuinely appreciative. Those are the people I want to network with. People who get that effort and attention are scarce.

I've met more than a few people at WF who can't be bothered to say thanks when someone spends 2 hours of their valuable time consulting them on their $10 a week website.

Don't get me wrong, I don't resent it. I like trying to help people if I can.

The take take take mentality is what Gary is addressing. If you don't invest in relationships, you're not eligible for the returns.

All of my biggest wins not directly related to hacking Google have been from relationship building, which is basically hard work applied socially. It's not rocket surgery.

It's not rocket surgery.

Damn, i wonder how many years of schooling you need for that degree ;)

I always appreciate clips like this - good reminder to think beyond those next 2 steps. Sometimes we get caught up in the everyday now, and forget to check out the big picture.
