Read a story about Jim Thorpe recently. During his time, he was hailed around the world as the best all-around athlete. According to the author, presidents and kings across the globe recognized him publicly. A movie was made about him with Burt Lancaster as the lead.
After sports, Thorpe went through hard times. Spent years drinking, and died a drunk. In a trailer (not down by the river).
His daughter was interviewed recently. She said her dad never really talked about himself. Not about his successes and not about his tragedies. He was pretty closed-mouthed, like most men during that time. My granddad was the same way. My dad is, too.
Today, attention whores go on twitter and FB to tell each other what they had for breakfast. Or, they share what they're feeling. These days, people can't get enough of themselves, and they want the whole world to know.
Probably comes from parents telling kids how special they are. Kids "grow up" thinking they're special. Old guys like me just shake our heads and think, "Pathetic."
People offing themselves is always sad. But people doing it on camera is pathetic (still sad, of course).
At the heart of it is narcissism.
Looking around at other parents and how they treat their kids, I'll tell you this:
It's gonna get a lot worse before it ever gets better.

I feel sorry for his family and friends. They have to live with what he did forever. The fact that he created a sideshow makes it even worse.
In a western country, what could drive someone to do something like that? In the video, he had a nice-ish looking apartment and big screen tv. There's billions of people in the world that don't even have that.
This guy definitely wanted some attention. He wasn't even a regular member of the forum. Seems he just opened an account to post this.

Not watching but not that surprised. Used to be suicide notes now it's.... well digitized like all other communication among most kids. Just read something else about a girl killing herself after getting bullied/taunted for taking a pic of her breasts for BF with her cell phone > BF's friend finds it, posts it online, makes it viral > Chick gets taunted > Off's herself. 13 years old.

When I was a kid there was a guy in my building that taught a bunch of us guitar lessons. Was in his 20's, kinda geeky, kept quiet except with that guitar. Did well with computers and was supposed to be a hotshot soon to be rich - his parents and mine were pretty close so years later we had a gethering and they did a lil' theraputic group chat about it all with some of us kids sitting in listening. They said they caught him taking out the screen to his window one night, and he said the room was just too hot - the very next night he went out of it, 17 stories. My moms friend found him coming from her car in the parking lot, and phoned it in and all that. Was a fucked up thing to experience as a kid as he was the LEAST likely and least fucked up kid in that ghetto ass building.
You just never know if someone is really happy, or what makes them sad/tick.
