I recently met a man who told me something that really changed my attitude towards life: Demand what you want with authority, not romanticism.
He was so right.

What is one thing you recently realized that made you a happier/better person? Share the wealth.

Ok, fine. I've realized two things.

1.) Age makes your ego disappear. Once you've been through enough shit in life, any semblance of an ego you may have once had vanishes. Anyone with an ego begins to look like a complete fool in your eyes.

2.) My parents are getting on in their years, and going to die sooner than later. I need to get off my ass, and spend more time visiting them.

Life is long as fuck. There is too much time. Those who say they don't have enough time are absolute shit at managing it.

isn't that how cunning ways of ego work like. feeling superior to others is full of ego bro.

There's a pretty obvious distinction between people who care what you think of them, and those who don't give a fuck.

Then especially in the 1st world, people have taken things to such a retarded degree, it's not even funny anymore.

My recent most life changing realization Is realizing there is no one coming to the rescue.. so get out that shovel and start clearing your own path.

That you can't drink every night for a year+ without experiencing adverse affects, and that there's no better motivator than your body telling you to stop in order to quit (or slow down) drinking. 3 months later, -25lbs and I'm healthier than I've been in nearly 10 years.

Mid-joint realization for the 5085th time:

if no more pot - i'd either become overly productive to a scary point or commit suicide after counting every minute of my day.

Many people mistake ego for douchebaggery. In reality, ego is essential to one's survival.

From here:

The ego acts according to the reality principle; i.e. it seeks to please the id's drive in realistic ways that will benefit in the long term rather than bring grief. At the same time, Freud concedes that as the ego "attempts to mediate between id and reality, it is often obliged to cloak the Ucs. [Unconscious] commands of the id with its own Pcs. [ Preconscious ] rationalizations, to conceal the id's conflicts with reality, to profess ... to be taking notice of reality even when the id has remained rigid and unyielding." The reality principle that operates the ego is a regulating mechanism that enables the individual to delay gratifying immediate needs and function effectively in the real world. An example would be to resist the urge to grab other people's belongings and buy them instead.

The ego is the organized part of the personality structure that includes defensive, perceptual, intellectual-cognitive, and executive functions. Conscious awareness resides in the ego, although not all of the operations of the ego are conscious. Originally, Freud used the word ego to mean a sense of self, but later revised it to mean a set of psychic functions such as judgment, tolerance, reality testing, control, planning, defense, synthesis of information, intellectual functioning, and memory. The ego separates out what is real. It helps us to organize our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us. "The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world. ... The ego represents what may be called reason and common sense...

Age doesn't make your ego disappear. Age refines your ego as you become increasingly aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
