Zynga Gunning Up (And Lawyering Up) For War Against Facebook With Zynga Live

The relationship between Facebook and its biggest gaming partner, Zynga, are at an all time low, we’ve heard from multiple sources. The level of stress, says one source, is “intense.”

Some of the frustration goes back to last year’s limitations on messaging users. But a much bigger concern now is Facebook’s force feeding of Facebook Credits as the only payment platform that Zynga and others can use. Facebook takes a massive feee – 30% – for Credits, and the big publishers like Zynga see it as little more than a protection racket.

To make matters worse, say sources, Facebook is trying to get Zynga to agree to a long term deal where Zynga remains primarily on the Facebook platform. During negotiations Facebook has taken some steps to punish Zynga, such as shutting off notifications for Farmville and other games, and Facebook has threatened, say multiple sources, to simply shut some of Zynga’s games down permanently.

Zynga has already taken steps to distance itself from Facebook in the event of a breakup, such as launching Farmville at Farmville.com. And they have been extra aggressive about trying to get users’ email addresses so that they can communicate with them off of Facebook.

On Thursday evening at 5 pm, we’ve confirmed, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus held an all hands meeting to tell employees that they may need to prepare for a break with Facebook. We received this email from one anonymous source, and we’ve confirmed it is largely accurate:

Pincus announced at a 5pm meeting yesterday at Zynga that Zynga was going to launch a social game network called Zynga Live. The Zynga Live initiative was a social gaming network. Facebook and Zynga has been negotiating on Facebook Credits and the talks turned for the worst. In the negotiation process, Facebook shut off Zynga\’s feeds and threatened to shut down games. Zynga in the process threatened to completely leave Facebook and prepared to do so in the previous upcoming weeks.

If Zynga does pull away from Facebook, I’d imagine they’d still let users log in via Facebook’s open graph as well as third party solutions from Twitter and perhaps MySpace. But Zynga would remain in control of their own platform and they certainly wouldn’t be forced to pay a 30% tax to Facebook for Facebook Credits.

Will this happen soon? “It could be tomorrow, it could be in six months,” says one source.

Zynga declined to comment on this story. We’ve reached out to Facebook.

Update: Facebook’s statement: “We have conversations with our large developers all the time and we don’t typically comment on specific discussions. But generally, our priority is to ensure a quality experience for Facebook users while fostering an innovative and dynamic environment that offers meaningful opportunities for all developers on Facebook Platform.”

My take:

Both companies will lose a shit load of money if this happens.

Agreed but Facebook will recover quicker and better. Facebook is going to be able to offer agencies/big brands the reach of TV with demographic accuracy that TV never could. And getting into the virtual currency game (after already being in virtual goods game) is going to make Facebook the gatekeeper to any game developer that doesn't have Zynga's resources to break free.

Zynga will probably do alright but not like their salad days with Facebook (just like aff marketers.)

Good luck bros

Frankensteins monster turns on him and tries to kill him. News at 10.

Facebook is just a bunch of children going through puberty and PMSing
(13 y/o kid fucked this 15 y/o tramp and had another kid)

could this relate to affiliates at all?

Same types of mobile/IQ/quiz offers were the big revenue generators that affs might push were provided by Offerpal to Zynga as monetization channels. It's more about the offers than the fact that somebody is or is not an affiliate.

facebook.. the next google. Seriously where do these assholes get off on charging a 30% fee? I feel for zynga on this. Facebook is turning into google, I hope zynga does leaves and facebook takes a huge hit.

It could affect some affiliates if app traffic was helping them, I would assume there would be some drop in FB impressions if noone could play zynga games.

A lot people spend more time on facebook playing zynga games then they do doing other things. In my mind zynga helps facebook right now, and I think zynga would have great if not better success doing there own "Zynga Live"

Considering most of Zynga's games are rip-offs of other games in the first place, I think that they'll hardly be missed. Anyone paying attention could see the Zynga implosion starting to happen months ago.

This. In my school I sit all the way in the back and there are 50 screens in the class. Atleast 40 people are playing Farmville, Mafiawars, or that fishtank one.

Possible, but if I had to be one way or the other, I would bet against that result. If Zynga can't leave their steaming piles of retardation festering in everybody's activity feeds the network effect that drives those games they are going to be seriously hamstrung. There maybe some hard core addicts that move on to Zynga live but how many people got sucked into Farmville just because "it was there"?

Maybe, but if those people are doing it just because it's there, they will be able to find it on the internet without the help of facebook.

Plus the facebook open graph shizzle will still make it appear on walls.

Yeah but who has an easier road ahead of them:

Facebook whose only change is that they now have more advertising inventory they can sell (i.e. no material infrastructure change.)

or

Zynga who now needs to completely rebuild their distribution channel.

Zynga is (was) #1 Facebook advertiser, rumored to account for nearly 10% of Facebook revenue.

If they drop Facebook, we could expect easier ad approval policies.

There losing an 80 million userbase application from their platform making less impressions and time on site. Unless I don't get what you mean aren't they losing advertising inventory?

Zynga may have to make a whole new distribution channel, but that should be there goal from day 1.

Use facebook to build an empire
Direct those people to our own site

Then they can sell ad creative ad space, market there own downloads. Do pretty much anything they couldn't do through facebook.

They've already made what they need with Facebook, now they just have to put their shit to work for themselves.

If they do make Zynga Live they could even sell ad space like facebook directly, I'm sure people would buy it and if they manage to retain their userbase they will be laughing.

That Zuckerberg can't keep out of trouble. He always likes to fight with people, lol. (remember the story about him allegedly stealing the facebook idea?)

Facebook makes(made) money off Zynga not (at least primarily) because they were able to sell ad inventory supplied by Zynga apps but because Zynga pumped millions of dollars into Facebook advertising to acquire their player base. The general consensus around here seems to be that app traffic is shittier, and hence less valuable, than non-app traffic so the net effect might be that there is less inventory but the fact that Zynga won't be such a large advertiser will mean that more profile/fan page traffic becomes available.
