Firefox 5

Are you moving back from any other browser back to FF?

Main reason I luv FF is the addons. No use getting the newest version if my tools aren't there.

Considering how long the other versions where out, yeah. Thinking they knew 4 sucked so rather than having a bunch of releases for it they just fixed it up, named it 5 and there we go. It's like Microsoft getting away from the stigmata of Vista with 7.

They changed their release cycle to a new full version every 16 weeks, so you can expect 6 and 7 by the end of the year...

They did this similar to why chrome does it, keep moving quickly and adding updates and don't ever have to worry about "big" update releases like they did with FF 3, 3.6, 4...

It's not that FF4 was a failure, it's just their new release cycle they adopted when FF4 came out.

I was going to wait, but you guys convinced me to go ahead and upgrade to 5. If it sucks, I'll be coming back for my revenge.

For anyone who's loving it, how many tabs are you running? This is where most of the issues begin :/

I tend to run a LOT. Right now Chrome has about 30 open but when FF was running fine back in the day I used to run 100+ even 200+ with multiple windows...fuck bookmarks. I could find anything within 3 seconds too :)

/me deep down really wants to BELIEVE

Firefox 5 is now decent, except I FUCKING HATE that goddamn status bar that was new with FF4, and also chrome. If you want the old status bar back, get this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/

Also, while we're comparing FF to chrome...chrome automatically updates flash player for you, correct? For some reason I always have to boot into safe mode to install flash player for firefox. Very annoying.

+rep to you, sir!

I am on Ubuntu 10.04 so I'll just wait until there's a decent repository with everyone else's bugs fixed. This is a smokin new box and I should hit up 11.04 eventually.

Totally awesome. Thanks a bunch!

I'm running Mint on mine. You can upgrade now... just be ready to be impressed. It seems like they have all the flash and memory issues licked with FF5. So glad to be able to use fullscreen again without all the hangups.

Chrome must have see a major rise in usage till FF4 was there. Now the downfall will be prevalent.

As far as flash is concerned - it is not a setting of brower. The flash installer has a check box for "install updates automatically". Also you can compile a no-addon FF browser very easily. This will prevent you from safe-mode booting when checking for updates. Yeah FF has great addons but they take up a shit-load of memory.

I think you mean stigma!

Firefox 5 Benchmarked - Faster And Better Than Ever Before!

According to that, with 25 tabs open - Chrome uses almost 1.2 GB memory, while Opera and Firefox are only at around 400 mb. I imagine they ran that test right after startup though.

It just uses too much screen space.

It still uses a bit more than Chrome, but with Firefox 4 they changed the layout to one a lot like Opera, which takes up less space than Firefox 3.

A lot of the screenshots out there aren't very wide and therefore don't give a good perspective, but here's a decent one I found : http://www.betaarchive.com/imageupload/1299545839.or.29972.png
