Windows 7 Beta: Likey/No Likey?

Ok, sorry. I usually don't install or judge products in beta phase...

The OP specifically asked for the opinions of people that have tried it. You haven't. So shut the fuck up and GTFO.

Back on topic somewhat...

I've downloaded the beta but have been too busy to install it just yet. My primary concern is driver support on my laptop so I'm going to install 7 to a separate partition first to test it out. Vista x64 runs quite fast and stable for me now, so I'm not sure what improvements to expect from 7 in that department.

Someone else mentioned Ultramon not being supported... I doubt it will be for a while. The author of that software is so slow to get an updates made (just see the debacle and time it took to get Vista support from him).

Guys, do you know what's the most hilarious thing in this whole "discussion". I say "new" features are lame, pathetic and have been done already in OSX for a long time. What you do.. you say I'm fanboy..... much in denial girls?

You still haven't told us what fantastic user friendly features the Mac has that the PC doesn't. Scrolling, animated icons doesn't qualify. General eye candy doesn't qualify. What is it about the Mac that makes it so much easier to use than the PC? Where is this ground breaking innovation you froth on about?

Go ahead, amaze me.

This argument has little to do with hardware or OSs btw. It's about people. I love Macs but I can't stand pretentious Mac users such as yourself.

On the subject of the post, I will wait for the release and then upgrade. I'm not interested in messing about with a beta right now.

Agreed...

Im getting really tired of seeing this kind 'my shit is better then your shit' across the board with damn near anything. I use what I use, if it works for me, then thats what im worried about.

There is no reason to come in here spouting about how great Mac's are - the title of this isnt 'Hai guys, give me your opinion on why Macs are better even though I didnt ask for it'

As for the actual reason this thread exists...

After downgrading my Dell laptop from Vista I was kind of iffy on installing anything that even looked similar but I installed it on an old comp at work and I gotta say that I am truly impressed.

Well there's plenty and it depends a lot of what you do with your computer. For example if you use your computer just for surfing, then it pretty much doesn't matter which OS you have.

For my usage, Expose with both application only and all windows is one of the most important features for fast usage. Also integrated support for MobileMe, Time Machine and excellent syncing that actually works.

Well Spotlight still is little bit ahead of Vista's counterpart but I don't count that as major difference.

I think most of the differences are sum of smaller things. I have never said that you can't do this and this with Windows. I believe you can do same stuff with both operating system, but OSX just provides so much better workflow in overall.

Well, for me the whole Windows is just much more complicated and hard to use. Everything is only few hundred clicks away and there's still way too many options for everything. That's the worst part of Windows in my opinion. There's just always a million and one options you can choose what you don't actually even need. I prefer stable OS that has lot less tweaking possibilities but workflow is much better overall.

I just wonder why people who haven't used OSX are so against it. And then they make asses of themselves when arguing with people who have used both operating systems (Windows & OSX) and can actually say how stuff works in both systems. I have to use Windows everyday because of few IM programs I have don't work on OSX and I have to run them on VMWare on Mac.

So let's put it this way.. unless you have experience of actually using OSX and Windows for longer time than testing, I really don't see you as very believable. It's same as I would argue that Audi is better than BMW because I drive Audi and I tried my friend's BMW for few mins and it was shit. It took 2 MONTHS of every day OSX use for me to realize how much faster I was able to work with OSX than I ever was with Windows. Also I realized I wasn't so pissed off all the time because OSX was steady and solid unlike my XP installation. Windows just goes to shit after a while when you install 3rd party programs. It's not Windows' fault but mainly how it was designed in the first place.

Is this your first OS thread? They always go like this when somebody dares to say new and amazing Windows features are actually something that has been around a while in other operating systems like Linux and OSX. In fact it's usually Windows vs. Linux more than Windows vs. OSX.

They always go like this because we have douchebags like you that come in and shit it up.

Also, I have used Mac OSX, I worked for a web design company that used it exclusively. Personally, I prefer Windows, but then again, thats my opinion. You dont have to like, listen or agree with it but it still doesnt make it wrong. I dont even have a problem with you spouting off about Mac this, Mac that.

My problem is that this thread has NOTHING to do with Mac's in the slightest yet you feel the need to bitch and moan about how much better Mac's are then Windows.

heres a few features osx doesn't have:

freedom to use your own hardware
ability to run mainstream games properly
any significant advantages over windows to justify the pricetag
reasonable price

to name a few.

rabid mac fanboi fags gtfo plz. this threads about improving an os (XP) that already works properly which mac has yet to pull off.

bye!

Spot on. I'm not here to talk about Mac and why I should drop $3k on a PC that's worth half.
I bought a Macbook a year ago (and I used to swear I'd never buy a Mac), but it was actually a few hundred dollars cheaper than PC laptops with the exact specs. Throw on top of that the fact that I have a spare XP copy around, and I just used it as a PC for a while. I finally installed VMWare fusion, and now run Mac OS mainly (especially when on battery, as it gives me 25-30% more battery life), with Windows in a virtual machine as needed. I tested out Windows 7 in a virtual machine on a friend's Macbook, and I was impressed with the speed. I couldn't get OpenVPN to work properly, but I'm sure that will work eventually. As for any flashy features, I don't pay attention to those on my Mac, and I don't in Windows.

I don't want to continue on the other points because it's not going to take us anywhere but these points are really weird.. Leopard costs $129 and it comes free with any new Mac.

Actually my problem has always been this windows bullshit with "new" features and I'm pissed off that they don't even try to bring some new stuff. Like I said, it would be just excellent if they could bring something new. And like you clearly see in this thread, people don't have a clue that these "new" features have already been done long time ago.

But since you have used OSX more than "testing" also but still choose Windows, I respect your choice.

My problem is that this thread has NOTHING to do with Mac's in the slightest yet you feel the need to bitch and moan about how much better Mac's are then Windows.
If you read my posts, I only said that this is really pathetic release feature wise and I don't think it deserves a new version number.

And if you read the thread, it wasn't even me who started to "fight" about this. I don't appreciate to be called as fanboy since I'm trying to base my comments on facts.

Isn't it just funny how you can't compare Windows to anything or criticize it's features without being fanboy of something?

I have vista on my laptop and its pretty bad. Im still using XP on my main computer. So far from what ive seen from the windows 7 screenshots it looks a LOT better then vista. Looks like something I may actually install.

Anyone know when the official release date on this is supposed to be?

Fucking Mac fanboys. 2009 will be the year Apple starts to die... and you can quote me on that.

This thread was supposed to be about Windows7. I don't think it said anything about Mac in the title.

Windows7 is a major upgrade for a lot of people, like me. I've used XP for years and skipped the Vista upgrade because it just wouldn't work. So going from XP to Windows7 brings a lot of changes, not just visual.

And personally, I don't think it looks anything like OS X... I think it looks better. OS X is played out and every Mac I see looks the same. People don't even bother trying to make things look different with their Macs, because that would defeat the purpose of having one.

Bottom line is it's just a fucking OS, who the hell cares? I've used them all and always come back to Windows, because it just works with everything I need it to work with. In the end it's more compatible with everything out there and will do anything another OS will do.

I don't want to continue on the other points because it's not going to take us anywhere but these points are really weird.. Leopard costs $129 and it comes free with any new Mac.

That Mac costs like 3 times which a Dell with same configuration will cost me -- so I don't really give a fuck about the cost of Leopard when the hardware itself is not worth the value for me.

lol, these topics are so sad. I think its some kinda of sport to bash anyone that owns a mac or anyone that speaks negative of windows. I don't recall the mac guy starting the fight in this case he just pointed out that windows7 sucks.

Back on topic.. I have 7 installed on my media center which is now dual boot with vista and 7. After using it ive gotta say that windows7 is just another rushed piece of crap pushed out by microsoft.

It looks just like vista but comes with really high res pretty backgrounds. You can now drop widgits all over the place which is great and all but its going to get really cluttered if you keep icons on your desktop. The task bar is now a huge grey bar across the bottom looks kinda lame. I can drop apps in it like another os that will not be mentioned. There is also now a tiny button at the bottom right to "show the desktop" which clears the screen. So basically its windows vista with an upgrade and more bits copied from another os.

Now on the plus side from what I can tell and from the reviews I have read. Windows7 benchmarks and runs A LOT better than when vista came out and the current version of vista. Most major bugs have been killed, shit runs better, less crashes etc etc etc. It seems there plan is to have vista end up like windows ME and get 7 out there to take damage control. It is a brand new OS? not really. Its vista with a few new bells and whistles and a shit ton of fixes.

That being said I will be killing XP and Vista and running it on my gaming machine and media center, but sorry but they totally ripped that other os again.

Btw, does Windows 7 finally tell you that the program is loading? If you click on icon, does it indicate somehow it's loading it? In OSX the icon appears in Dock and you can see it that it's loading it.

Exactly but strange how annoying a little thing like that gets when you first get used to that you see that it's loading. This is of course only issue with slower machines where you actually have to doubt if the slow piece of crap registered your clicks and is starting the program :D

Can you actually prove this or are you just quoting something you heard long long time ago? I'm not saying you are wrong because I don't know if it's true but I saw some blog post a while ago where they did some price comparisons with same hardware specs between Windows PCs and Macs. The result was that in most of models, Apple costs slightly more, like 10-20% but in few models the price was actually cheaper.

You also have to keep in mind that Apple doesn't update their machines or prices when there's a slight change in the prices or new hardware comes up. They update in cycles.

And of course it's cheaper to build your own computer from the parts you buy individually. That's how the case has always been and how it always will be. I used to build my computers from components, do some serious overclocking, water cooling and shit like that. But then I kinda grew out of it and now I just want a computer that works and I have minimum amount of hardware related issues. I remember so vividly when I was tearing my hair out because Windows was crashing all the time and then I found out after hours and hours of troubleshooting that my new digi-tv card was using same IRQ (or something like that) than my soundcard and that caused those failures... ah, golden times :)

Funny how all this praise proves the main reason people won't use Vista is FUD and not any actual issue with the OS.

Windows 7 is Windows Vista. Look at the kernel processes, the thread counts barely changed, there's almost no underlying difference, just UI tweaks.

The "Vista wouldn't run on my hardware but Windows 7 has all the drivers" is hilarious, since there is no driver difference between Vista and 7. Windows 7 drivers are Vista drivers. That was one of the goals of the OS, to not change the driver subsystem so manufacturers don't have to write another round of drivers.

lol@you. Of course it's the same basic OS (however it uses far less system resources than Vista), but it works out of the box. When Vista came out it wouldn't run on my hardware, that's a fact. There just wasn't enough support yet.

Now that Vista has been around for a while there are drivers that support my hardware, sure. But there definitely wasn't when it first came out, which caused me to stick with XP.

I could use Vista now and it would work, but I would also have to pay for it, which I won't do since Windows7 is on the way. So...

Vista didn't have the support it needed to be successful for me when it launched, so I trashed it.

Hence, why I said "Windows7 is what Vista should have been". It already feels like more of a finished product that Vista did a year ago.

Vista should have still been a RC until Feb. of last year.

Hours? The bsod or a single glance at the dump files would have told you that. Maybe you shouldn't have been building computers? Kind of makes since that you went over to a Mac now...

Just sayin'
