COULD YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT MONEY?MEET THE GUY WHO DOES: DETAILS Article on men.style.com

I get that money is not really THAT important in the scheme of things. However, if I was going to be honest I would say money is important to me because it's an extension of my worth. It is a measurement of success and I have a deep independent desire to be successful. And while it's true this culture is ridiculous in it's money hungry consumerism, how is just living in a cave a discipline of self improvement ?

(And yes, I know, I'm probably presenting this article to the wrong crowd for a nonbiased look at money and culture)

They make it sound like he should be praised.

I work fucking hard every hour of the day to earn money to try and get ahead in life.

But to each his own...

Eric

Interesting article! Thanks for the share.

I wonder if he masturbates to nature.

If he really believes everything he says then I think that's pretty badass. I hope he's not just trying to rationalize being a bum.

I used to read this guy's blog... they are kind of stretching the truth in this article. He actually spends most of his time living in a tree-house in his friend's backyard and house-sitting for people for months at a time. He only goes out to the cave every once in a while...

Edit: Just found his blog. Read his very first entry, he talks about the tree-house and house-sitting. Moneyless World - Free World - Priceless World: My Summary of Why I Live Moneyless

WTF... the last thing I'd expect is for this guy to have a blog. Lame...

I was going to actually read the article before seeing has a blog, now fuck it.

Some people get sick of thinking about earning money and paying bills month after month after month. I have thought of a plan to get by completely autonomously on about $500/month (if you have a little startup push). You just get a cargo or conversion van, a 24-hour gym membership, and possibly a parking space near the gym. You keep your stuff in the van and sleep in the van on a small cot. You use the gym to clean up each day; you use a laundromat or whatever to keep your clothes nice. You just hang out and do your thing during the day, and basicly just return to the van to sleep. This would work best in an urban center where you can hang out at bookstores and coffee shops and stuff.

Probably not most people's cup of tea. I'm not planning on it, just came up with it one day when I was daydreaming about how you could spend the least and still seem "normal." I see those commercials about how much you could have earned in interest by saving and it makes me want to keep all my cash for retirement! :D

I came up with an idea once to spend 24 hours in a 24 Hour Fitness and document it...never got around to it though.

Most of the ideas for not living with money don't really jibe too well with having a family . . altho I have considered it a time or two. After consideration, I always just say fuck it and start thinking of ways to get more cash. It's out there, grows on trees, just need to know which ones to shake.

Eustace is the real deal.

Unlike you, mister, I'm planning to do this when I get my mini-van. Will update with pics. :D

Yeah I did something similar after getting out of high school turned down a college scholarship and spent a few years bumming around state parks and national forests. Only worked enough for gas and food, really was a pretty nice way to live life.

It does get old after a while and so I eventually decided to "grow up" and chase the almighty dollar like everyone else.

This guy is a bum.. in the sense that most bums have a distorted view of what money is.. money is a store of value.. a receipt for value you have produced for others.. this guy disavows money because he does not know how to create value for the world.. nor does he have a command for using money wisely..

he blames money for the health problems of some natives he helped in the peace corp.. it wasn't money, it was these natives poor use of the money that caused their decline in health.. they could have used that money for a boat load of other postive ventures..

he complains that we worship gold even though it is 'useless'.. refers to the native american disdain for gold as a 'useless yellow substance' he sees it that way because he is a bum who would rather disdain something others find value in because he can not find the value himself.. gold is used in electronics, jewelry.. investment ports etc.. all things man has found use for with this 'useless substance'

he's single.. why? probably because other then a curiosity, he has made himself as useless to society as a tossed out banana peel
