Fuck You, Jay Leno

From TMZ:

Jay Leno just finished his monologue tonight where he addressed the Conan O'Brien situation head-on, saying that in 2004 NBC didn't have faith Jay could remain #1 in the ratings.

Jay explained that NBC execs came to him five years ago and told him they wanted to give "The Tonight Show" to Conan because he was getting other offers. When Jay pointed out he was #1 in the ratings, Jay said the exec told him, "We don't think you can maintain that."

Leno said the network guaranteed him two years on the air. He said the network knew he'd get killed during the main TV season, but thought he'd excel against summer re-runs.

Jay said when the network approached him about doing a half-hour show at 11:35 PM, he was hesitant but said getting beat in the ratings humbled him.

He asked the network exec, "Do you think Conan will go for that?" The exec said yes.

Leno repeatedly complemented Conan, calling him a "gentleman" and saying, "Don't blame Conan O'Brien."

At the end of the day, Leno said, neither of them were delivering the ratings they should have been.

Either way, Leno's audience will be dead in a few years and all NBC will have left if Jimmy Fallon.

Perhaps. Perhaps not. That's what NBC thought back in 2004, and Jay was still leading the ratings when he left in 2009.

But yes, whenever Jay does retire, they will have a problem replacing him . . . because I don't think they can go with Jimmy Fallon.

Conan is huge here in Finland. When he visited a few years back, finnish president invited him to the presidential palace, he was all over the TV.

I've been following his shows (Late Night and Tonight's Show) since 2005. I think he kind of lost in 2009 but now that he is about to leave NBC his shows got a new spark. The one with Ricky Gervais which aired a few days back was one of his best in my opinion.

I remember when he was said to look similar to Tarja Halonen and that was a great running joke in his shows for a while.

I think the larger problem that no one's addressing is that late night comedy is an outdated and, for lack of a better word, lame comedy medium that should go the way of MJ anyway. Conan's kind of funny, Letterman's less funny and Leno's less funny still, but really the whole format is just terrible.

If it's not a cartoon I'm not interested.

Cartoon? Screw that. I have ADD and if it's not a 30-60 second trailer with explosions and sexual situations then I'm not interested. I have standards.

I've sided with Jay regarding this whole situation (even though I prefer to watch Conan).

But I do like what Conan said during his last episode:
"Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. It's my least favorite quality. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get.
But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
