Maryland Meetup?

Weather.com has been useless for the past few days. The National weatehr service agrees on the weekend forecast, but "a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
* Precipitation type... snow.
* Accumulations... potential for 8 or more inches of snow. There is
a good likelihood of snow in excess of 10 inches."

So I'm going to count on spending tomorrow night at the hospital, but the weekend might work for me. You said you have a dedi coming on line - are you keeping that at home or somewhere else? Someone from baltimorenode.org told me that we might be able to get a 600 square foot workspace for $300/month but they use shared comcast line for internet. I didn't realize that prices for a workspace in downtown Baltimore were so cheap. Running a hackerspace styled nonprofit would be a good way to organize meetups and share resources.

Info on workspace!

The snow is for only Tue. and Wed. I've heard around 12 inches possible. I'm sick of this snow. But it looks good for the weekend if you guys meet up. I would like to meet up one time as well, since I'm sort of a newbie to alot of this. But I can't this weekend, maybe next time if you guys do it again.

ps- I never look at weather.com they are always wrong. haha.

If you need some help let me know - I got a few hours free for a phone call if you need some pointers and/or direction.

30 inches already. Possibly 20+ inches tomorrow and wednesday. R U EFFING KIDDING ME? This is actually pretty awesome.

PS: I'm down for anywhere but if yall are interested in WINGS than KISLING'S (1 block from my house) is voted Best Wings in Baltimore every single year and trust me... it is very well deserved. Best Wing's I've ever had and > BDUBBS if you ask me.

It's not my fault you don't know the commissioner. Fuuuuuuu poorly connected crying kid.

umm what? How does knowing the commisioner (the person who sets bail... wtf how is that even applicable to disputing charges) have anything to do with blatant violations of the fourth amendment as a policy of he Maryland police force?

n 1990, the state police set up a drug task force called "Special Traffic Interdiction Force", or STIF. STIF targeted drivers along Interstate 95 in northeastern Maryland. The unit was composed of six white troopers. Over the course of six years, the STIF unit, using the drug courier profile, pulled over and searched black drivers four times as often as they did whites. One of the troopers, Bernard M. Donovan, searched only black drivers. In 1992, the Maryland State Police's Criminal Intelligence Division developed a "Confidential Criminal Intelligence Report", which troopers used to make stops and searches based on race. The report encouraged troopers in Allegheny County to increase searches of black male drivers by saying that "the county is currently experiencing a serious problem with the incoming flow of crack cocaine". The Intelligence Report professed that "the dealers and couriers (traffickers) are predominantly black males and females".
The Criminal Intelligence Report came to light through a lawsuit filed in 1993 by Robert Wilkins. Wilkins, a Harvard Law School graduate, was a public defender in Washington, DC. In May of 1992 he was returning to DC from a family funeral in Ohio in a rented Cadillac. He was accompanied by his aunt, uncle and a 29-year old cousin. Wilkins was pulled over by a trooper in western Maryland for speeding. He and his family were ordered out of the car and forced to stand in driving rain for more than an hour as the state trooper brought in drug-sniffing dogs to search the car. No drugs were found. Wilkins and the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit and, in 1995, won a substantial settlement from the Maryland State Police. As part of the Wilkins settlement, the state police agreed to compile a database of all stops of drivers on Maryland highways in which police ask to perform searches or in which a search is done by a drug-sniffing dog.
White motorists make up 78 per cent of Maryland highway traffic, while black drivers account for about 17 per cent and other minorities about 5 percent in the state. When the Wilkins data were submitted to the court in late 1998, they showed that between January 1, 1995 and December 15, 1997, more than 70 per cent of the people who were stopped and searched on Interstate 95 were black and about 77 per cent were minorities. Only about 23 per cent were white. The data also revealed that the vast majority of drivers who were stopped and searched and not found to be carrying any drugs were also black, more than 67 percent. The ACLU has used such data to bring a class action suit against the Maryland state police.
Clearly, the Wilkins litigation did nothing alter the racist practices of the Maryland troopers as evidenced by the testimony of State Trooper Michael Lewis in a recent criminal case. Lewis told the court that he pulled over Robert Ware in large measure because he was a young, black man. Lewis admitted that he factored in the race of drivers on a daily basis as part of his drug interdiction work. In late 1998, the Maryland State Police assigned Lewis to a post as an instructor, training other troopers in how to identify potential drug couriers on the state's highways.

anyway, I'm done, have fun at the meetup guys and stay safe!

Def. I think Panera should be the first one and then we'll decide from there once we get a feel for who'll be there, etc.

Because I don't get put into jail in the first place, you know, because I don't do anything to piss them off. That's why I don't get charges in the first place. And why the fuck did you try to hijack this thread into a debate of police and abusing forces when we're trying to get together and talk business?

Take it somewhere else douche.

It's not nearly as awesome after shoveling a 100 foot driveway.

And I still haven't gotten my car out of the snow:

Nice Prius. Love the color.

Yeah, we're expected to get another 4-6 inches here in Western NC. Which basically means the remnants of nuclear fallout to the ignorant redneck population, and that a lot of my classes will be canceled, allowing me to focus on my campaigns.

But sadly, not be driving anywhere. Especially if they close the highways leading out of campus again.

Fucking prison.

Next time, Bofu, next time.

@Human - where are you in western NC?! That's my next, hopefully last destination. A cheap place at one of NC's ski resorts and/or mountain biking hotspots would be a nice place to settle down. I'm looking at every place from Banner Elk to Bryson City.

@Bofu - I didn't tell him exactly what we'd be doing, but here's the whole email from root at baltimorenode.org
We're paying $650 rent and about $150 utilities. There was--a few months ago, I think--a 600 sq ft space for $300, so I think we're paying more than other studios because of the location (street level, lots of visibility, we have our own door).

The building has a kind of unique shared utilities and data setup. You'd probably have to expect to find your own communication services if your servers are doing anything critical on the web. Then again, if they're that important, you probably wouldn't be scouting space for them in station north. I think we were on the shared Comcast connection for awhile, but are in the process of switching over to WiMax.

Feel free to stop by on just about any Thursday night (wiki.baltimorenode.org/index.php?title=OpenHack) it's likely there will be a member around who could give you a tour of the building. It's also possible you could find someone to open the doors if you need an interim spot for your meetings.

I live in Cullowhee. It's a small town, but Western Carolina University is here, and that's where I attend (sophomore).

We're about 25 minutes from Bryson City, which is extremely close given that on the weekends we go to our closest mall in Asheville (80 minutes away).

I know that there's the Tsali biking trail close by, but it's recently been littered with horse crap from all of the horseback riders wanting to get their trail in.

But there's also Joyce Kilmer and the Smokies, so there's no limit to how much mountain biking you can get done when you have the time.

It will be weeks before anyone can dig out of this mess...can you do it a little more metro accessible?

Yes we will surely change our plans for someone with 1 post.

Anyways, I'm down for whatever, as long as we aren't totally buried with snow. Panera is fine, maybe we can hit up a bar or something afterwords. I could also bring the hookah by.

I'm definitely going to this meetup and definitely going to be snowed in at work tonight. greyhatdude on AIM if anyone is bored.
Right now I am writing content for several projects but I don't have anything live. I took all my failed projects offline on New Years so I'm not a noob, but I'm not exactly rolling in cash. Wondering what everyone else who is going to the meetup is into.
I'm creating mininets of autoblogs/white label sites/ecommerce stores/review sites built around broad niches and will be buying LFE for promotion when my content is done.

I'll look into Real Estate in Cullowhee. Tsali/Bryson City is so remote that it might not be a realistic option. It's amazing, but it would be like living on a small island - impossible to meet women. I think a ski resort near a college town would be the best option for me. If I could find a ski resort IN a college town I'd be all over it.

Edit: Boone, NC. Hmmm.

I think this is a great idea.

I'm in AA county, but will travel pretty much anywhere in state. Just let me know when and where.
