$170 Mil...Microsoft Just Killed Everyone With Halo 3

Am I the only one who thinks all Halos are shite? They are all average 1st person shooters. They bring NOTHING to the genre and the only reason Halo 1 got so much attention was because it was the first good shooter in consoles.
 
This is the most astonishing part of all...

In its first 24 hours, Halo 3 racked up $170 million in sales in the United States. This put it ahead of the 24-hour revenues of both the Spider-Man 3 film and the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book release, they said.

Ahh but then again, movie sale tickets are NOT $60 each, and neither are the books they are comparing it too. Plus Microsoft's profit margin is HUGE, because they developed and designed it all in-house. So it goes from Microsoft to the stores to the customer. Very simple and quick payouts for them. Although movies only share in small profit margins, they also go through a few phases, each racking up millions and millions more. But then again, doesn't Xbox Live have a monthly fee tied to it?

I understand that Microsoft banked REALLY hard on this and all, but at least compare it to something in the same per unit sale price region instead of the movie ticket price ($6-$10 per ticket depending on the city). Books are usually half the price of a video game (avg $20-$30 per unit). So when they sell almost 3 million video game units at $60 per unit, well no shit it's going to kick the asses of the other entertainment areas. Plus they are able to create teasers and unreal hype for it AND the Halo series is made exclusively for Microsoft Xbox.

All I'm saying is if you're going to make claims, at least make it fair.

Even so, good job to Microsoft for finally doing something cool and delivering on their promise. What did that take? Like 20 years?

I hate Halo's as well, played the first one and then just gave up because they are so ghey

Now sit me down with a good strategy and I could be playing all day long

Fuckin' A! Finally someone who agrees with me!! :bowdown:

Ever since the first Halo came out, I thought it was the most overrated, over-hyped game in history. I honestly don't see what is so great about this game...

Yes - I DO think the Halo games are shite. I played both Halo and Halo 2 on my Xbox, but I also played MANY other action games and FPS games on that console. There are many, many better games than Halo on the Xbox. Many. What is it with that game that gets people (and the gaming press) so fucking excited?

I can't speak for Halo 3 since I haven't tried it, BUT for Halo and Halo 2:

- The graphics were nothing but average for their time and there were many other titles with better graphics. Chronicles of Riddick anyone? Pariah anyone? Doom 3? Come on...
- The enemies are ugly and look like they were "designed" by 7-year olds
- The enemy sounds make it sound like a kiddie game - not an adult action-shooter.
- The level design is waaaay too big and repetitive.
- The game-save function is severely lacking. I played the co-op campaign with a friend of mine for FOUR hours on Halo 2, only to realize the next day that all our time was wasted because we hadn't reached the right "checkpoint" for saving.. WTF.
- The gameplay is nothing but standard point and shoot sci-fi action. Nothing wrong with that - but I'm sick and tired of the press portraying it as "revolutionary" and "ground-breaking" in Halo. It isn't! Stop pretending this series is any different than all the other action FPS's!
- Most of the weapons are dull and you end up playing through the game with the one only usable gun.

I watched the long version of the video review of Halo 3 on IGN the other day. I see nothing that impresses me with it, other than the new replay function which would be kinda cool if you're playing online. But the graphics still don't touch Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 from what I can see. And the design looks no different than Halo 2...

Oh well... that was my rant. Just wanted to let you know I agree with you micfire! :D

To each his own, but I don't think you could be more wrong. :)

As far as I'm concerned GoldenEye 007 was the first good console shooter.

YES! GoldenEye for the N64 was the shit. When I was a freshman in college, we spent many all-nighters drinking beer and smokin weed playing that game. We memorized all the spawn points and where all the weapons were. Good times. :rasta:
 
Hmm..
Played Halo single player and thought it was OK.
Online was crap though.
The same reason single-player was relatively easy, the self-healing made multiplayer games feel like chewing gum.

It's all about the online game play, 500,000 people on at any given time. For the campaign play it on heroic or higher otherwise it's a cake walk. There's skulls you can get to make it harder as well.
