8.8 Quake

Terrorizing footage

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-A0NDsPcZY]YouTube - Tsunami Hits Japan! Live Footage!! 3-11-2011 ~ 2:05EST[/ame]

I was in tokyo 2 summers ago and got hit with a 7.2 and 7.4 and during the 3 weeks I was there. First earthquakes I've experience... and I was at the top of the tokyo dome too.

It's only an advisory but the tsunami's going to hit my spot in 2.5 hours. I'm very close to the water and my main workstation is on the ground floor. Could be a long day.

Japan's architecture is prepared for earthquakes. Whether or not they are prepared for earthquakes at almost a 9 on the Richter scale is a completely different story. If I recall correctly from high school earth science, the difference between an 8 and a 9 on the scale is 1000, correct?

It's basically synonymous with the levees in New Orleans withstanding a Category three, but getting a Category five. Total devastation.

I'm sure that the people there are prepared for this kind of thing, though.

CNN just reported that they found around 200 bodies near the city of Sendai.

Look at that footage of the wave coming inland. You see a major highways with 18 wheelers and cars going along and then just being swept away. Horrific even contemplating finding yourself in a situation such as that.

Japan just got another one 5.4 and they are expecting several more 6's today. Keep safe out there.

They're weak where I am, but it's crazy. I've been feeling aftershocks all day. I have no idea how many. In Tokyo and of course Sendai, and everywhere in between, every aftershock is like another major earthquake in and of itself.

bsun: That is some of the most horrific footage... watch those cars going down the highway and probably not knowing what is happening. I found myself rooting for that little blue/black car to make it only for it to be swept away. FUCK there were people in there...

Father was supposed to fly there today, that trip was canceled real quick. 2 other business partners are currently stuck. One was on the tarmac about to fly out when it struck. Not fun.

Shit happens. On the bright side, the death toll should be significantly less then Haiti.

the rekon that the West coast of the states will expect 3-4 ft sea rises. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that only like 1.2m which is peanuts in the scheme of things. the japs just copped 9-12m waves and the west coast of the states is going to get 1.2... it is almost like why bother panicing everyone unless they are on the beach..

It's not the height, it's the speed and the length of the surge. 3-4' of water moving 500 mph (800kmh) with an unknown surge duration...as it starts stacking up against resistance (buildings, cars, people) it will be forced vertical, most likely causing significant damage...if it maintains those projections across the ocean.

Berto, go surfing. I like your chances better riding it in over sitting in a cube when it smacks you in the face.

QFT. Ive been watching jap tv and it is nuts how strong it was.

NHK on ustream: foxtokimekitonight on USTREAM:

Watching that BBC link: The quake today was 1,000 more powerful then the one in Christchuch NZ weeks ago.

They are missing a 'second' train full of passenger in Sendai.

Currently expecting aftershocks that could be as powerful as the original quake.... SHIT

heading to the office 200 feet from the beach down here in a few minutes, I'll head out to the sand when I get there and see if the swell shows any sign of changes.
