A diet thread for grown-ups

What about humans who rely on large quantities of meat and animal fat to survive, such as the Eskimos?
I couldn't comment - I imagine not too many studies have been done on that, particularly in regards to their obesity levels and their life expectancy.
Anyways, to cite my post above:

There is no 1 diet fits all. Everyone needs to be on a different diet based on their sex, physical location, job, ethnic background and family history.

Try a personal trainer. Doctors might not give a shit about you - personal trainers are like the IMers of the fitness world. Always want to run around you and show off what they can do.

Like the IMers here giving diet advice.

PS - Can you guys help me perform my own colonoscopy and maybe solve all my relationship issues too? I'm sure an IMer has advice on these too. Instead of professionals in the space. Fuck it, I might just go ask my doctor if he wants to make more money and push some bizops instead of this bitch "medicine" shit. Maybe throw it in as an upsell after the prescription.

I'm showing myself up as a hopeless optimist here, but I believe that at least some of WF's members are capable of intelligent, reasoned discussion. I'm sure I'll be bitterly disappointed and disillusioned by the outcome of this, but what the heck.

I'm genuinely interested in the subject of nutrition, and I have my own opinions. But I'd like to hear others as I've already learned some interesting stuff here.

Some ground rules :

1. Any assertion has to be backed up by proper, peer-reviewed evidence.
Home - PubMed - NCBI is the place to go for this.

Not some documentary, and not some book/blog post by a guy with either a product or an ideology to sell you.

And before you say "but scientists are all in the pocket of the evil corporations/pharma/obama", I'm married to one, and no, they are not.

2. No image macros/flaming etc (told you I was a hopeless optimist)

3. If you want to attack someone else's point of view, do it with your own studies, or by pointing out flaws in the evidence/interpretation. No ad hominem attacks or straw men.

So..... what constitutes a healthy diet?

If the USDA can be in someone's pocket, who's to say scientists are immune from conflicts of interest?

You remember that red meat study that people made a big deal about a few days ago?

Look at the footnotes here.

The China study ([ame="http://www.amazon.com/China-Study-Comprehensive-Nutrition-Implications/dp/1932100385"]affiliate link bros?[/ame]) shows statistical evidence linking animal products (meat and dairy) to cancer, MS and a variety of other diseases. Read it, went vegan... not saying it's for everyone but it opened my eyes.

If less than 50% of your diet is raw, your digestive system recognizes food as a foreign body and triggers an immune response (slightly biased source). By increasing your raw food intake to 51% or greater your body's immune system is not activated.

Seeing as how diseases like MS, crohns, etc are auto immune disorders, increasing the amount of raw foods eaten could lessen some symptoms as well.

Exactly what I was after... thank you, I haven't seen this, I will buy it.

I'm not sure how the 50% thing works out (by dry mass? by calorific input), but I'll take a look at the book before commenting further.

The China study is what the vegan doctors Dr. Ornish and Dr. Esselstyn base their stuff on which I mentioned above. They have books. There are many people who say the china study's analysis has major flaws and assumptions though.

I was unsure as well, still am. I err on the side of caution and probably have a 75% raw to 25% cooked ratio. Pro tip - pick up a vegetarian/vegan cook book... only way I am able to stay on a vegan diet. Shit's got me making cream cheese with nutritional yeast and ground, raw cashews. Takes time but is tasty as fuck and full of health benefits.

The china study is not a fun read, but it is full of stats and in depth studies... more of a text book really.

I have been a bit overweight for awhile, and in the past I have tried being vegetarian, calorie counting, running half marathons, biking, etc. All of that just had me either gain even more fat as I just seemed to eat more to make up for the burned energy, or lost a little bit of weight but would be starving and gain it all back which is non sustainable.

The last 60 days I have dropped 20+ pounds and feel so much better. All I did was low carb, no sugar, & 3 days a week of heavy weight lifting along with protein shakes. Wish I figured this stuff out 5+ years ago, and thanks to all of you who recommended Jack3d in other threads.

This is a good post+video on sugar:

Sugar 101 – How harmful is sugar? (PART I) | Peter Attia | The War on Insulin

This is another good video, basically a vegetarian Stanford professor showing Atkins type diet is the best out of the 4 he tested:

Yeah, tbh I'll be skimming then grabbing the sources from the bibliography. Epidemiological evidence is often controversial, because it's impossible to control for all the different variables.

I try to stick to these foods around 80-90% of the time: eggs, spinach, almonds, various salad vegetables, butter, olive oil, berries, coffee, full fat cream, steak.

I am healthy. Just had all kinds of blood tests and shit. The results said I am pretty awesome.
