I think I'll wait to give a shit until after Amazon starts making a profit.
Err?
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Balance Sheet - NASDAQ.com
(Numbers are in the thousands)
and huh?
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Interactive Chart Analysis - NASDAQ.com
(protip: check the "max" button to see the complete history)
Now, while I don't worry about AMZN's finances, any foray they made into data foraging has been nothing but utter failure.
Ever tried their contextual ads? laughable results
Their internet search? Excuse me while I try to calm down bing's laughter.
The stuff they recommend me... horrible.
I am a longstanding customer who shares
everything with them.. they have my complete purchase history of ~ 10 years (yep, started using them the minute they arrived) and they can't make heads or tails out of my data.
To be honest it'd be ridiculously easy to milk me for double of my current spending with them.
And this is not high - level stuff I am talking about.

le One:
One-time items.
So sometimes I buy real items from amazon. One nice example is the spyderco triangle sharpmaker - awesome knife sharpener that I highly recommend.
What COULD amazon recommend?
Knives - or... even better .. accessories for this tool that I rated highly. (There are replacement sharpener inserts, and one for hardened steel)
That'd probably be an easy sale.
What DO they do?
Recommend me 20 different knife sharpeners over the course of the next months via email.
How many of those things do you think I need if I
like the one I got?

le Two
Ever since the first kindle, I buy e-books in English language - this is about 95-98% of my purchases.
So what to do, Amazon?
Of courseII Recommend the German hardcover version of books I already bought (and read - they have that data) for kindle in English.
So yeah... taking this "DA NEXT GOOGLE KILLAAAH!one1!!1one!!" headline with a grain of salt or two.
