Any of you guys do CrossFit?

There is an awful lot of bro-science around. Starting with nutrition (Paleo, etc..), via training the "core" (while valid, it is an overdone staple in any marketing for thes fads) and ending with the clusterfuck that is CrossFit.

What's broscience about Paleo? It's basically a raw/organic high protein, high fat, low carb, no gluten diet and I am willing to bet it will become the gold standard of diets in 10 years. What's broscience is making people think they need grains which can't processed naturally in the body and that we need to drink animal milk. A lot of people get really sick if they attempt that feat.

Our bodies weren't meant to process meat, either. Kind of kills the whole Paleo argument.

holy crap most of that is terribly bad for you.
I will have a fitness site opening soon for promotion btw :)
pps.
:)

The reason I'm interested in it is that I want to start doing Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, etc annually. Those are more about muscular endurance/cardio than strength. The only thing that really prepares you for those races in Crossfit.

Getting your body accustomed to running up and down the Grouse Grind will do more for you than CrossFit if you're looking to succeed at Tough Mudder, Spartan Race and the like.

When I used to do marathon running on the island we would always keep Kusam Klimb - Are You Tough Enough? on the summer training calendar as performing well in a (basically) half-marathon that goes straight up and down a ~5,000 foot mountain requires training that makes your body a lot tougher.

Here in Vancouver, the best possible power cardio / brutal endurance training is to run the Grind. If you can do it without stopping (good luck), then you're fit enough to run to the bottom and do it again.

I remember this old goat in my old running club saying "Being able to run the Grind once means that you qualify to race it. Being able to run it twice means that you stand a chance"

Keep drinking that animal milk bro like the pervert you are, I don't care.

Yeah. Everyone knows Animal Milk is bad for you.

I suggest you join the RunnersWorld forums and have a talk there. You'd be surprised what adding hills and steps to your run will do for you. Especially when you incorporate the steps into interval training at your local school's track. They always have bleachers there you can run up after you do several intervals on the track.

Once you can run at least a 10k every other day for a couple months consecutively, then think about adding obstacles in. Doing weird shit starting out is just going to tear you up. Besides, once you can do 7-8 miles in one go for a few weeks, you are ready to do a half marathon because you've built up a very good mindset to get through and keep going.

And isn't that mindset what you're after anyway for something like Tough Mudder?

My latest thing has also been to sarcastically rip on all of my friends who have their crossfit cult gyms post pics of them exercising on facebook.

"OH WOW YOU'RE SO GOOD AT EXERCISING!"

"WOW YOU ARE 30 AND YOU STARTED EXERCISING? I'M SO PROUD!"

"LOOK AT THAT FORM!! PLEASE POST TO YOUTUBE"

"OMG OMG I NEED TO SEE MORE PICS OF YOU EXERCISING! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ACTUALLY DO SUCH INSANE THINGS LIKE... EXERCISING!"

Sometimes I also post this:

Which is kind of hypocritical because I also do triathlons and distance swims, but I can poke fun at myself.

Lol triathlon is the next level crossfit. Everyone and their overweight mom is doing triatlon while becoming sick, injured and unhealthy in the process.

Brb 100 m swim, 1000 m bike, 1000 m running = triathlon.

No offence Berto (srs).

Coming from an actual CrossFit gym owner here:

Each CrossFit gym is independently owned and operated. Therefore, you have a wide spectrum of gyms ranging from a crapton of SHITTY gyms where the owners & trainers don't know jack shit, with their only qualifications are a weekend certification program, to your quality gyms where the owners & trainers come from strength & conditioning backgrounds which they've basically dedicated their lives to.

For every 1 good crossfit gym there's maybe 10 shitty ones. That's the main problem CrossFit has right now.

Also, speaking on the kipping butterfly pullups that you guys posted:stupid for somebody that can't even string together a couple strict pullups together to even attempt. And that's the kind of distinctions good CF trainers & owners will make.

Problem A:The paleolithic diet was probably NOT what is being sold to you
Evidence suggests the diet of Stone Age humans did include, in some form, the refined starches and grains that are excluded from the Paleolithic diet. There is evidence that Paleolithic societies were processing cereals for food use at least as early as 23,000[91][92] or 30,000 years ago,[93] and possibly as early as 105,000[94] or 200,000 years ago.[95]

Katharine Milton, a professor of physical anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, has also disputed the evolutionary logic upon which the Paleolithic diet is based. She questions the premise that the metabolism of modern humans must be genetically adapted to the dietary conditions of the Paleolithic.[18] Relying on several of her previous publications,[87][88][89][90] Milton states that "there is little evidence to suggest that human nutritional requirements or human digestive physiology were significantly affected by such diets at any point in human evolution."[18]

Problem B:Humans seem to have adapted rather well to milk and grains
Thus, it seems that a diet can be functional (it keeps us going) and dysfunctional (it causes health problems) at the same time."[83] Moreover, S. Boyd Eaton and colleagues have indicated that "comparative genetic data provide compelling evidence against the contention that long exposure to agricultural and industrial circumstances has distanced us, genetically, from our Stone Age ancestors"[12]

Problem C: Providing a diet high in red meat is environmentally unsound / impossible

Problem D: Health problems resulting from a diet high in red meats
Red meat consumption is associated with an increased risk of total, CVD, and cancer mortality. Substitution of other healthy protein sources for red meat is associated with a lower mortality risk.

crossfit is for fucking fags

my town is infested with crossfit gyms, its fucking retarded.

all the chicks are walking around with veins coming out of their neck..."oh yea babe that looks so hot, but your vtaper and shoulder width could be better"

kipping pullups looks like half a retard having a seizure trying to fuck himself vertically

cross fit gym owners = geniuses, not knocking that. way to take advantage of the masses. from this thread alone even 90% of it being bad, 1 person will join crossfit, guarantee, bad press is press.

ive been working out for 8 years now, i walked around most my adult life at 160 now im 200 and i can do 30 pull-ups, deadlift, bench and squat properly... and be able to lift a box that fedex delivers without looking like a girl.

I joined a CrossFit gym, cause I want to Dunk before I die. I'm focusing on getting my vertical up trying to dunk by the end of the year and gained about 4 inches in 2 months. I estimate I need about 3 to 5 more to do it!

I hate going the gym I always found it boring as hell.

Really though it has paid off on the basketball court, more explosive, recover faster, able to control my body better.

It is obviously not for everyone and gyms vary, but I like the competitive nature of it and seeing a guy crush a WOD keeps you motivated.

Also flipping tires, climbing ropes, sprinting back to back is challenging as hell. Don't believe these shitty videos and pictures.

If you want to dunk, you don't need crossfit, you need knowledge of plyometrics and you need a bigger squat. I can see it helping somewhat in the knowledge department, but so can a weekend reading starting strength and the vertical jump bible.

P.s. - I'm training to dunk too.
