anyone good at magento customization?

What solution did you end up using? Im not TOO far into this to switch yet

I went with a custom solution, but I don't know what type of project you're looking at so I don't know if it would make sense for you. Mine wasn't a regular ecom site but I needed an ecom platform for some of the functionality. PM me if you need more info.

Exact same thing, sending pm

Wow, that's not good I've got magento slated for a new project. If anyone has a good alternative please post it here.

I used X-Cart back in the day, it's probably pretty mature now. CS-Cart too.

But if I was going to do ecomm today, I sure as hell would be looking at a hosted solution. When you're doing ecomm, you really don't have time to be a developer and webmaster.

They're hard to find because Magento is, for lack of a better term, hard. Getting your head around the abstraction and even the ORM database takes a while. Which isn't a problem if your extension is already coded and for sale in Magento Connect but if you need a big extension custom coded you're talking about $1k roughly on oDesk.

i try to hire devs off of themeforest that have top selling themes in the category... did it for a shopify store before and plan to do it for a magento store shortly

Sounds like better advice than Odesk, Vworker, Guru, Elance, etc. I had a terrible time getting even the most basic Magento customization done through those services and went through 7 different developers and a bunch of cash before throwing in the towel and switching to OpenCart.

Although now that I'm on OpenCart I can see all kind of shortcomings with it, as it's still in it's infancy compared to Magento, but it's a lot easier to work with IMO.

Just throwing this out there. Find a backend you really like then build your site around their API and that will provide you with all the functionality you need. The power of the back end with the all flexibility on the front end.

OpenCart (opencart.com) is easy to customize, relatively new/uncluttered code, etc.

PrestaShop (prestashop.com) is similar, but better for EU needs.

Either can be up and running in 15 minutes or less and each has a somewhat sane plugin/extension framework and decent ajaxy default themes.

I do a lot of work with magentos api - hate their theming system. Drop me a note through PM with what you are trying to do and i'll see if it's something we can handle for you.

We went with Magento enterprise at my day job and had it highly customized. We paid a little over $120K for the programming and design. Well worth it.

For me personally, I am currently testing Presta.

I am actually expanding into Magento and I am understanding it well so far. If any of you still have jobs to be done in Magento, I would be willing to hear the details and let you know if can do it. Of course, because I am not experienced, payment will be after work is done.
