Anyone here ever in sales?

As I've talked about before on here, several years ago I used to be one of those shady assholes that sells speakers out of a van all around the city. Sometimes the money was great, sometimes it was non-existent.

Scamming anonymous people on the internet is one thing, but scamming someone face to face on the street and then walking them to the ATM to take out their last $400 is another. I'm over that.

Yea Zig is great. So is Gary Halbert, Dan Kennedy, Claude Hopkins, Jay Abraham, Robert Cialdini, John Carlton, and a bunch of other dudes.

Reading a Dan Kennedy book on how to market to the affluent, such a good resource so far. Just reading it grows little money trees in your head. :)

i worked for Dell in the E&A division. i sold electronics and accessories. Me and a guy from my hire group were on the same team and in two weeks we were the #1 and #2 salesmen in E&A in the world for Dell, then two weeks after that they shut down our call center due to about 90 people suing dell at my site for unpaid overtime. that was a nice payday for only one month. :)
i won my boss and team leader an xbox 360, PS3, and 42" tv, yep i did not get them because corporate thought it was my boss, and teamleaders "awesome training skillz" i was pissed to say the least.

So back when I used to be the sales manager at a fitness center, a lady came in to sign up. she had with her one of our direct mail pieces (Advertising $9/month and only $9 to join).

The first thing she asked me upon greeting her was "It's only $9 to join right?" I replied, "yes we will discuss all the details after I tell you more about our club."

So I gave her my regular talk, explaining in depth about all the benefits of a personal trainer and why it's essential she has one...

At the end of the day, her $9 to join turned into me selling her over $800 in personal training, and I got her for nearly $100 on the membership fee, over $900 total. Needless to say I was a happy man that day.

I was a telemarketer for mbna credit cards for a couple months in high school, but I was never very good at it. The only people who would ever agree to signing up for credit were the really desperate overdrawn ones who would never get approved anyway. Either way, I got my $2 bonus. The easiest ones to sell were the ones who already had mbna cards and you just had to convince them to apply for a new card. The software they had for dialing and filling out the app was fucking terrible.

i sold paintball guns to parents of 10 year old kids, ....not as hard as you might think. I loved it when i was 18 and some 30-something yr old dad would walk into the store with his kid and tell me we're not buying anything today

........................................^^^^^ lol

I use to do a LOT of in home presentations with husbands and wives. The husband would always say something like, "Go ahead, give your presentation so we can get our FREE gift. I'm NOT buying anything though!!"

I'd SMILE and say, "Sir, I PROMISE not to SELL you anything, just so long as "YOU" do not try to BUY anything."

During my presentation they would ALWAYS ask what the cost was before I finished. I would then say, "Sir, you are trying to BUY. If you were not, you would not NEED to know the cost. I said I would NOT sell you anything so long as YOU did NOT try to BUY. I'll let this one slide, but if you try to buy again I'll HAVE to sell something to you." I'd smile again and they did too usually.

If the wife asked the buying question I'd let here know that I PROMISED her husband that I wouldn't sell anything to them.

It was usually FUN and I had a pretty good close ratio.

I worked as the Sales Manager for a Mid Cap Manufacturing Firm before I did this. I think a lot of the skills needed to make an effective affiliate manager carry over, ie building relationships, organization, negotiation, blah blah blah

French telemarketer.

Yeah, the <<exciting job>>.

I have called, and keeps on calling, for many kind of products and services, mostly in French, but I may use English, too.

So, sell:
- Dental prosthesis.
- Construction equipment.
- Wine events.
- Wine fair.
- Insurance.
- Web design services.
- etc etc...

Mostly to France, & French speaking Canada => Québec.

If you need somebody to enhance your sales, I am available.

Kind of ironic that this thread was bumped because I may have a sales job soon. Anyone still around who can give me some tips or PM me maybe?

the best salesman I ever learned from was incredible at what he did. godlike. he was rarely in the office but when he came he closed and then left. best job in the world because he was just that good. anyway, he would tell me to just sit outside his office and listen. I did when I could and learned a lot.

the best advice I can give you is find someone like that and just watch what they do and say. if you're working somewhere where its high commission, I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so.

a lot of it jameel is stuff you won't learn from a book or a PM, you just have to see it

good luck to u sir

I sold low voltage solutions as well as electronics to new home owners. Then landed a gig selling colocation for a datacenter. Became an owner and continue to work in sales (higher level now) for the DC as well as Outsourced IT consulting and Web Hosting. Selling is the heart and soul of any business and everyone who can learn it should in my opinion.

Although this is not a sales only book. You should check out the E Myth revisited. It helped my change my focus from working in my business to working on my business.
