Anyone use an exercise ball for a chair?

Since I am training for rock climbing, I have a script that runs on my mac that interrupt me during the work day and tells me to do a few different push up, ab roll, core exercises. The 30-60 second break every 15 min. is really good for my concentration and since its short I don't mind doing it.

Well I said screw it and went to wal-mart tonight and bought an exercise ball. For $19 I might as well give it a try. I've been on it about 10 minutes so far and it's okay.

^ A lot of people have recommended the Steelcase Leap chair to me, but a lot more people recommended the Herman Miller chair. And after spending $800 on a chair that wasn't even as comfortable as a $180 chair from Office Depot, I'm not in a hurry to spend $1,000 on another chair.

If you went to walmart and just bought an exercise it wont work very well. If you read the packaging it says not to use it as a chair and not to sit on it for extended periods of time. They are cheap pieces of crap and may pop while your sitting on it. When you see people sitting on the ball chairs in movies and offices and shit they have ones made to be chairs.

Every single review I've read today about using an exercise ball (yoga ball) says otherwise. The one I have is a Gold's Gym brand, with "anti-burst" and says straight up in the manual it can be used as "an excellent ergonomic replacement to your average office chair".

So far it sucks just as much as everything else.

On a side note, I just got back from a neighbors house and he had one of these on his deck:

That thing was comfortable as hell and I'm seriously considering modifying my desk to use one.

I did something similar but instead of exercising, I would go boldering on my wall. 4x4's on a 12'-16' training wall every hour are a crushing workout. You won't do it two days in a row, you won't be able to move. Now it sits, disassembled in storage. Suck. Supersets of weighted dips/pullups every hour work fairly well too.

came for this, leaving satisfied.. i won't ruin it by posting the clip.

Is your friend Casey Serin?

lol! Haven't thought about that guy for ages. Wonder what happened to him...

OP, give swimming a try. Apparently a decent half hour of swimming can cause you to grow by up to an inch as you stretch out.

I've used an exercise ball for awhile now... probably about a year and a half. Really comfortable, highly recommended. I use a generic too - no need to get one of the ones specifically made to be a chair.

Try Obusforme. If you're going to get a chair, get one from a company that specializes in back support. Global Obusforme Multi Tilter High Back Chair 53 1 2 H x 23 1 2 W x 23 D Black Frame Claret Fabric by Office Depot

I hate chairs that don't have a high back and head rest.

Also consider a hydraulic keyboard tray. This way you can adjust the height and tilt of your tray and have it exactly where you want it.

Try taking the arms off your chair. With arms, you slouch on your elbows, which over time messes up your shoulders and neck. No arms, less slouching. You can also maneuver your chair closer to your work surface and they aren't going to get caught under the edge of the desk and bang into things when you get up.

Consider a hydraulic desk that raises and lowers. This way you can switch between sitting and standing several times a day. The best ones have 3 surfaces that adjust for keyboard, work surface and monitors and have memory recall. Ikea used to make a budget one that worked with their Gallant surfaces but it doesn't look like they sell it any more. Steelcase does several. Steelcase - Adjustable-Height Worksurfaces

I'm sure Herman Miller, Teknion and others all do them too. They're popular in call centers and my ex boss has always had one both in the office and at home and totally swears by them.

Turbo, you should be calling Steelcase and asking for royalties on the Walkstation posted above... see my link.

I use my Aeron for 14+ hours a day, don't exercise, and I have no back pain. I've been using the Aeron for 7 or 8 years.

I think switching for one month and not seeing results is faulty reasoning. If your back is fucked up, even switching to a good chair isn't going to help your back right away unless you repair the problems you have first. Back problems are chronic and difficult to fix for the most part.

I used to have back pain too but doing stretches in a yoga class helped out. Now I just do back stretches for a couple minutes a day and I'm fine

I sit on a fitball all day

I have an exercise ball at work that I sit on for 8 hours every day and another one at home that I sit on for several more hours. I've never had one pop on me but I do have to re-inflate them every few months.

I've always had very bad back problems and sitting on the exercise ball has helped me quite a bit. It hurt my lower back for about a month until I finally got accustomed to it, but now I prefer it. I've been sitting on one regularly for more than a year now.

I do notice that I sometimes slouch every now and then though so I have to make sure that I sit up straight. It's not much of a problem.
