It's called saving face. Legal experts are already saying this will be an uphill struggle for the Obama administration to charge Assange due to constitutional protections. In fact it says this in the OP's article.

The thing is... at this point Assange doesn't need a domain/ host/ registrar to release information. He effectively IS wikileaks. He's a mobile platform and can just send whatever he's got to any paper he can get the documents to.
yeah im not sure what's happened, the nameservers in the whois are still everydns, unsure why they havnt simply been changed? the domain is still regged to tynadot and the record hasnt changed since august
So after all of the confidential leaks about government wrongdoings for months, nothing happens. He announces a huge upcoming leak about corruption with some of the worlds largest banks and now all of a sudden the site goes offline. Anybody else notice that?

I'm going to go w/ gross negligence that contributed to the mortgage debacle. Maybe even collusion between some big time players to intentionally create the problem. Should be interesting.
