Ebert is a left-wing dumbfuck. I'm shocked he doesn't like a movie about individualism, liberty and free markets.
Fair point, so let me explain my position on this:
Back in the 80's, Consumer Reports told members to stay away from the Ford Escort (specifically, years '84 through '86). Their review of the vehicle was that it was badly made, and prone to breaking down.
I listened to 'em, and am glad I did. My trust in Consumer Reports turned out to be well-founded since that model turned out to be a dog that left a lot of people stranded.
That's the purpose of reviews. If you trust the reviewer, you follow their advice. If not, then you ignore it. That is intuitive. Man has done this for a long time in every sector.
I've followed Ebert's movie reviews for nearly twenty years. It took time for me to trust him. I realized after a few years that our perspective on films was consistent (not correct, just consistent). Rather than wasting time seeing hundreds of disappointing films a year, I now follow the advice of a trusted reviewer. It has saved me a lot of time.
When folks on this forum ask for others' advice/referrals on vehicles, headphones, accountants, and countless other products, they are essentially doing the same thing. I do it with films. I know what I enjoy about films, and have found a few folks who have consistently pointed me in the right direction.
Example: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
Users on RT thought it was pretty good (76%). Critics on RT did not (20%). Ebert gave it 1 out of 4 stars. That was enough for me. Despite a lot of 16-year-old boys raving about how TOTALLY AWESOME it was, I imagine Ebert saved me time, as he has for many years.
He gave Atlas 1 star. The director and screenwriter have sparse track records. The public seems to like the film. But keep in mind the public (on RT) also seemed to like The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Spoiler: Ebert didn't. lol
As for Ebert being a "left-wing dumbfuck," okay. Does his alleged left-wing dumbfuckery make him incapable of reviewing this film? I don't think so. And I'm fine with gambling on that.
Will be seeing; Haven't read Atlas Shrugged (I should), but I know enough about the book, and Fountainhead is an all-time favorite.
Agree that Ayn Rand is probably rolling over in her grave, but this looks like the best movie of the year (not saying much at all, I hate every movie I've seen this year).
