Backlinks vs Content

What is more important: backlinks or content?

Google pays a lot of attention to the adding of content and back links over time. If you are doing white hat sites you should aim for adding unique content to your site at least once a week/month. And adding quality, relevant back links slowly over time will always win over many shitty ones.

And now since the Google Mayday/C affine update the algorithm is taking into account several other factors that have been influenced by social media and other things that can weigh more then back links like:

average time a visitor spends on a site, whether they are leaving comments or not, liking your site (FB), or tweeting your site. Basically in Googles eyes if your site is giving unique, quality, and relevant content then visitors will spend more time on your site and get engaged with it i.e. commenting, FB liking, and tweeting.

this is one reason why authority sites are doing so well since the update and long tail keywords on thin affiliate sites took a huge hit in the rankings

Just my two cents worth

agree with Grindstone that you need both.

if you are in a niche category without too much competition, excellent content works just fine as i did a website that's on the first page of google.com.ph.

however, if there are too many competitors, backlink will be the backbone of your website.

If making money is your priority, good content and copy is #1. You can get all the traffic you want but without good content, you won't make a sale.

1. convert first
2. traffic 2nd

content along with an exact match domain will turn you into this guy...

Backlinks are the lifeblood of your SEO, but to get quality ones, you need to focus on good content. If you publish great content, you will get the backlinks you need. Yes, it will take time, but that's the best way to do it. Links that you buy/trade for are not nearly as valuable as the ones generated by good 'ol fashioned quality content. To the search engines, quality backlinks are like votes...the more you have, the more popular you are considered, and the higher your ranking will be. If you have content that others genuinely find informative and interesting (and WANT to link to), you're more likely to get the 'votes'.
Thanks for that Mrs. Cutts...

This poll is like asking: What is more important to plants - sunlight or water?

Once you have developed good content mixx it up and people will surely digg it once they stumble upon it, they may even find it to be delicious and if so once they've reddit it will flickr like a propeller through the newsvine from all that buzz, in fact it may even cause a quadriot. This is nothing to kwoff about, many a blogger do this. Don't believe? Just ask Mister Wong.
