Backlinks vs Content

What is more important: backlinks or content?

Unfortunatly backlinks win, you can type out a shitty article in 10 minutes and rank well as long as it contains keywords and has days of backlinks going to it. As long as the content is readable and doesnt make people click off the page too quick it is backlinks that count most. But if you want a 'proper' site then yes content is king for steady rankings and repeat visitors.

If you have kick-ass content you will attract backlinks... For example you write an original piece on something and it makes people laugh or scratch their heads. A bunch of sites will point to that content (e.g: SB site etc).

Also if you post it on Ezine articles for example it will get distributed across other sites (if the content is kick-ass and site owners like it). In that case you get even more backlinks.

HEALTH

How is this site even on page #2 for the keyword "health"?

That is fucking hysterical....... it's out ranking Google DirectoryHealth/

It's over 4 months since you posted this and the site has not been de-indexed yet.

A few more of these examples like "healthnoise.com" would make me re-examine all of my theories on SEO, backlinks, content, and sandboxing.

Maybe it's because it has the search term in the domain name, 5+ years old, and has lots of backlinks.

For me content is just 20% of what needs to be done and 80% is backlinks. Content is On-page optimization and backlinks is Offpage which is more important and more complicated than just writing content.

I had a website with 2 pages of content and it failed to show in Google top #1000 results, even with some serious backlinking.. It seems 3 pages is the minimum threshold.

I voted for content as although both are vitally important, I believe getting the content right before introducing backlinks is the way to go.

Create a value content, Then after you have a nice content... jack your website ass with backlink.

To me Backlinks and Content are both important. However, Backlinks got an edge because it can bring traffics. If you get a lot of traffic, you can get conversions by accident even if the content is not that good. On the other hand, if the content if great but don't have any Backlinks to generate traffic, no conversion will be obtained.
My 2 cents worth - Thank you

It's both.

But definitely true that inferior sites get to the top due to backlinks.

So obviously backlinks often trump content, but both are important.

I used to think it was backlinks only, until one of my content sites, that I completely forgot about, managed to magically rank itself :p

Content cannot be disregarded completely, that's all I can know.

BOTH are important! Content is important because it determines your users and how many people it helps as well as how many people recommend it and keep coming back for more.

Backlinks are important as well, albeit in a different role. They play a major role in SEO as well as gaining page ranks.

If I were you, I would try to invest in both of them.

In my view Quality Backlinks always have an upper hand to Content though both are important.

Offpage optimization matters more these days.
