In my experience in IM, I haven't quite found a domain registrar that I've loved. I've had bad experiences with many of the majors and wanted to get a group opinion on who is the best and the worst.

Here's some of my first hand experience:

1&1 - sent me to collections

My domains expired and my expired cc on file declined on auto-renewal. The collections agency put a collections item on my personal credit report. ICANN policy states that the domains must be withdrawn if they're unable to collect payment.

1&1 - took 3 months to forward on a complaint addressed to the privacy physical address

NetFirms - permanently disabled my domain

A high-volume PPV campaign had people complaining it was spyware/adware because of the popups. NetFirms took it upon themselves to call us malware and take our domain.

GoDaddy - made us pay a $75 administrative fee for spam

An e-mail affiliate got their IP listed in the Spamhaus SBL database. The e-mail redirected through several jump links and eventually to our offer. GoDaddy claimed that this could potentially get GoDaddy added to the blocklist and demanded we switch registrars and pay a $75 admin fee.

I understand that a lot of this falls under the category of "bad stuff I've done" but does the registrar have the responsibility to police the Internet?

Please share your experiences good and bad!

NameCheap and Name.com are good alternatives!

1and1 is the worst registrar I have ever seen.

You couldn't pay me to register at godaddy or 1and1. If you take your work seriously, keep your domains far away from them.

I have nothing but good things to say about Namecheap. Great control panel, really quick nameserver propagation, no annoying ads or spammy upsales, and they don't take your domain away at the first angry letter they get.

btw the november namcheap coupon is familywarmth

Moniker is okay too

I now use Namecheap, Moniker, and Gandi.

1and1 sent me to collections too after I reported my card on file lost/stolen to get them to stop rebilling it.

I got the 1&1 collections item off my credit report by writing a scathing letter to the collections agency about 1&1 running an illegal negative option program. The auto-rebill was buried deep into the T&C's. I think they've since changed the signup process.

I stumbled on this strange site called doteasy free webhosting. What do you think about it? Do you think it's a scam or something awful and more of like a waste of time?

I use Godaddy but I don't particularly like them.. its just a pain to move everything away. They haven't done anything wrong as such but I just hate the whole website and checkout process.

1and1 I use for .co.uk domains only. Same situation really - I want to move away but the cost/effort is not worth it.

Ouch. 1and1 and GD? I've always thought that must be like having Aids.

Been using Godaddy for a while and haven't had any problems apart from the I-will-take-an-eternity-to-load issue.
Their vast availability of various coupons helps a great deal.
