Breastfeeding In Public

A new campaign promotes legislation that would aid mothers trying to nurse their kids in public (ads from the campaign can be found below). Here's a link to the petition:

Here's the funny (or sad) thing: the petition doesn't actually promote laws that allow women in Texas to breastfeed in public. It doesn't need to. State laws in Texas already allow public nursing:

A mother is entitled to breast-feed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be.

Rather, the petition promotes laws that prevent others from making critical remarks to nursing women. From the Behance.net site:

Welcome to the When Nurture Calls campaign. This aims to protect a mother's right to breastfeed her baby in public by striving to pass the bill HB1706, which will protect breastfeeding mothers from harassment and discrimination when they choose to nurture their child in public.

Now, "harassment and discrimination" can mean a lot of things. You might picture an enraged conservative screaming at hapless women for daring to expose their breasts in public. But "harassment and discrimination" can also mean refusing to share your table with a nursing mother at your favorite coffee joint.

In essence, advocates of the campaign don't want nursing mothers to feel bad, and to that end want to criminalize public criticism.

Here are some of the ads being used to promote the campaign:

Now, you're probably thinking, "Those chicks don't look half-bad. I'd love to check out their boobs in public!" But of course, that's called marketing. The reality is probably far less appetizing.

Incidentally, I have nothing against nursing mothers. I just want to avoid this chap's stare the next time I'm trying to enjoy a fantastic rib-eye and a glass of cab...

Legislation is stupid.

But I've never understood why anyone gives a fuck if other people nurse their kids or not.

lul.. My wife nurses both kids, in public whenever needed and without a cover. There might be a time where there's a 1/8th of a second where you might be able to see a nipple as a kid latches on or off. She's gotten looks before, no one has said anything and fuck those that ever might. They'd get an earful.

And of course, neither of us would support such a retarded attempt at a law to shield us from hurt feelings.

I'm with Jake here- I have no desire to see some self-absorbed bitch whip out an udder and start producing slurping and sucking noises, at least not when I'm paying good cash for a meal. If it's in a park, or other setting like that, then by all means, latch the little cannibal on.

But if it's in a sit-down restaurant or other primarily adult venue, and they can't sit up in a chair and feed themselves solid food, then keep the giggling little milk-suckers home or take them to motherfucking chuck-e-cheese or something.

There's a big difference between breastfeeding at a restaurant with your tits blatantly hanging out exposed and doing it conservatively where it's not noticeable unless you're trying to stare.

That's true- but this isn't about you or the way your wife handles it, dude. We're speaking in generalities, and I got news:

In 52 fucking years on the planet, the women who I've observed breastfeeding in public with decorum and discretion have been few and far between. My own Mother was one of the worst offenders, and as the oldest of TEN kids, I've seen a lot of "spilt milk".

And every kid is different, too. Some just latch on and sip quietly- others noisily suck, slurp, chew, and emit little cries and moans. And that just flat ruins my dining experience, and that's not right either.

Most nursing mothers (and their partners) are so bound up in the whole "new baby" deal they are completely self-absorbed, they think everyone should be with them on it, hence this bullshit action from some idiot for new and unnecessary legislation.

Imho it's fucking simple- if you absolutely have to go out to dinner or other adult event with an infant, one bottle of formula ain't gonna kill the little shit. You get what I'm sayin?

It doesn't have to be formula (that shit is a nightmare nutritionally), breast milk can go in bottles. But not all kids take a bottle; mine didn't for a long time.

How many times have you actually been bothered at a restaurant from breastfeeding? I can't remember a single time in my life. Now a screaming / crying baby, yes, I've seen that plenty. You know what usually helps that? Breastfeeding. Or taking them outside when all else fails.

Being 52, you seem a little wound up, going to end up with a heart attack.

My SO's sister whops out her tit and breastfeeds any time she likes when we're out for a family meal... I'm not the biggest fan.

You sound like a person with feelings or something here. :)
