Building from broke

- I've added a fake facebook + twitter account on my website. Design of it looks similar(ish) to the one on icohol.com.
- Bought a UK hosting package. Need to get it set up.

My to-do list:
- Microformats/ Rich snippets
- Finish setting up social accounts
- Buy social likes
- Update titles/ meta data
- Rewrite articles + add pictures + Internal linking in articles + Authority outbound linking
- Check if compatible with almost all phones + browsers
- Fix email subscribe button on mobile versions of website
- EU cookies code
- Install recent posts that shows recent posts for each category plugin
- Buy social accounts from marketerscenter (Cheaper than Knowem)
- Get hosting transferred to UK
- Change to non www?
- Change favicon background to white
- Get CDN
- Add email to contact
- New address for contact page (virtual mailbox?)
- Make/ Buy more content
- Finish calculator

In regards to the www, This whole "non www" idea is some looney tunes hipster shit. All domains I control redirect everything to the www version. It's more a style preference that anything else. No SEO benefit what-so-ever. This is the same crowd of hipsters that use ruby on rails and started their careers on php. So take that into consideration. So they want the whole internet tidy white. Fucking hipsters.

Great! That saves a bit of work, thanks. Also imo quite of a lot of URLs look better with www, gives a bit of symmetry with the domain extension.

- Make some decent web2.0's
- Buy aged domains
- Collect emails myself instead of using aweber script
- Fix mobile top menu
- Pagespeed Errors (?)
- Fix Validation errors (terms of service page/ Category pages)

Done:
- Changed favicon background to white
- Fixed email subscribe button on mobile versions of website
- Added email to contact
- Validated all pages. 2 still need to be fixed.
- Paid for UK host and it's being transferred as I speak

Also just to note I'm removing the Facebook like and Twitter Follow buttons from the homepage. The scripts are about 250kb uncompressed and 85kb compressed. This almost doubles the size of my page (pretty incredible just for two buttons). Might add them one day in the future when there is enough traffic.

Just use a link in your website for now which says something like "Check out facebook page here for more reviews!" and link your fb and twitter back to your page. Dont just leave your visitors high and dry, thinking there's no other way to keep up with you.
This not only creates more links for your people to navigate back and forth temporarily, but also keeps the traffic on your socials: hopefully your socials are good enough to bring them back. But imo, it's completely worth having the buttons. Just my two cents.

Yep i've included two visuals on my site like on "icohol.com" with the image of twitter and "Xk followers" beside it and Facebook with "Xk fans" beside it. Will turn them into links when I have bought some likes/ followers and have something to show people. Having like 30 likes is pretty embarrassing for a brand site so I'm faking it for now. I might add something in the future for liking/ following but I may just do this on the blog posts or something. I'm not sure yet.

Update: Uploaded the new design to my website. Getting cloudflare up. Feeling pretty zippy right now.

Got sick of working today. Stopped early and did a few hours of site updates:
- Got the content back
- Optimised the page so all my pages are now 96-100 Pagespeed score (Many are 100) and 99 YSlow score. Also doing a few other bits and pieces (check out zoompf.com - it's even more comprehensive). Page now loads in 0.3-0.5s, faster than 99% of the other websites on the internet according to pingdom.
- Received the 1000 words of content yesterday. Put it up on the home page and added a few authority links in there.
- Bought the 0800 (UK freephone) number for a set-up fee of £6 + 2p per minute. Shouldn't be many if and calls but it looks more professional. Will go to voicemail and i'll get emailed the voicemail recording. Will get this when I submit proof of address (tomorrow).
- Currently filling out Web Developer Checklist - Have pretty much all of them checked. Should be finished soon. Skipping the "accessibility" and "security" sections since wordpress handles security fine here and I'm not going to spend time optimising colour contrast for the colour blind while I could be working on other parts of the site.

I'm also setting myself a target for this website. I want to flip it for $10k+. Optimistic but not unrealistic.

hey sixth,

I'm about done my layout for my first flip site as well. I had the pagespeed at 98% for google and 90% for yslow but the caching plugin was messing with my theme. I switched my cache plugin and while my theme is no longer having issues, now my pagespeed had dropped to 90% G and 75% Y. I could probably learn a thing or two from your efforts. PM me your skype. I was using a tutorial from GTMetrix which was helpful.

Sent PM.

Exhausted from work.

Making finishing changes to website. Will start writing content again mid next week. People I bought the 0800 number from charge £60 for voicemail redirect it seems. Ive got a refund and ill buy a 0845 from someone else.

Tollfreeforwarding.com

Highly recommended

Thanks. I went with voipfone instead as they provide you with a free number when you sign up. An 0800 (freephone) number is also only£6 p/m with them.

Also i bought 20 credits from 123rf, a stock images company. Updated my social profiles with an image of a guy (there are more of him to use in the future). Will be adding pictures to my posts and adding microdata now.

EDIT: Also buying some UK/US followers + likes on fiverr.

Glad to see you truckin' along. Can't wait til you start rakin' in some revs

Thanks. I'm probably aiming more for selling the website now. So mainly quite a bit of traffic (aiming for 1k+ a day) and a little bit of revenue (like $200 a month or something).

Target sale is $10k.

Have you gotten Google sitelinks yet?

Unfortunately not but that's probably down to a few factors:
- I've been working flat out on real life stuff for 12-16 hours a day, 7 days a week for the last month.
- I was away for a couple of weeks at Christmas in a place with no internet connection (and no nearby cafe's).
- I got too hung up on optimising speed. I'm going to give it a rest now that I'm in the 99th percentile.
- Perhaps I've been a bit lazy and/or have been concentrating on minor things too much. Probably the latter. I feel like I've been spending too much time doing stupid tiny things instead of churning out good content.
- I don't have the money to pay for good content (or stock photos), I have to make it myself. I'm also not a great writer so it takes me a good while. Money is tight to the point that I'm going over to help someone move some furniture for a few hours just so I can pay for most of the fiverr social gigs I need.

The good news is that a lot of that is going to change after this Wednesday. I'll have far more spare time and I'll have time to supplement my income with other work. I've updated my to-do list below:

- Buy more social likes. I'll need to spend another $40 on Fiverr to get Twitter users up to ~10k and Facebook users up to ~5k.
- Update titles/ meta data. Google has indexed my page with a crap meta description. Completely my fault because I haven't set one! Stupid. I'll do this now.
- Rewrite previously written articles, add stock pictures + photo captions + Internal linking in articles + Authority outbound linking + add tags
- Either 301 404's to homepage or make a prettier 404 page.
- Add trust logos (not sure how I will fit these in!).
- Add content to top of category pages and possibly tag pages.
- Add address (virtual mailbox). Currently too expensive.
- Set up hootsuite and bufferapp.com to post to socials.
- Add a resources page
- Make local citations (when I get the address) + buy video testimonials from fiverr.

Delayed until the future:
- Install recent posts that shows recent posts for each category plugin.
- Collect emails myself instead of aweber + don't change page after submit.
- Newsletter customised sign up thank you page + email.
- Do what Knowem does (can't afford it).
- Make some decent web2.0's + Buy aged domains

I'm actually kind of doing two things at once currently. I got pretty lazy last year after a fairly bad series of unfortunate events and ended up piling on a lot of weight. It's the first time in my life that I've ever considered myself "plump" (not quite fat, but almost there). So about three months ago I decided enough is enough and started working to improve my body. I'm on a fairly strict bulk, eating 160 grams of protein a day and working out three times a week. I saw lots of gains at the start but they were unfortunately just temporary so I've been grinding for the last while. I'm very proud to say that I've managed to keep it going for almost three months now and I can see myself getting back into a good shape (and improving even further!) by the end of the year despite the fact that my entire wider family are constantly telling me that I am doing it wrong and I just need to "eat more veg" and putting some pretty heavy pressure on me to stop.

As a story it sounds like a piece of crap but it's been incredibly important to me. I've shown myself that I CAN work hard and keep pushing myself even when everyone is telling me to give up. I'm looking forward to 2013. This will be the year of reinventing myself by proving myself to others and more importantly, myself.

Goals:
- Sell this website and earn some money. Reinvest.
- Aiming for 165lb @ 10% body-fat. Next year it will be 175lb and 10% body-fat.
- Move on from past mistakes.
- Go somewhere interesting.
- Give back to WickedFire.
- Learn basic conversational Russian.

Oops forgot this wasn't a diary :L Oh well.
