Buy a juicer

bu-bu-bu-bu-mp

Finally ordered my Juicer it will get here on Monday! I got the Beville XL 900Watt -> [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QBFFU8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=loghomcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000QBFFU8"]Breville 900watt[/ame] model.

I finally ended up getting one because the girlfriend is out of town and I decided to watch documentaries instead of TV. Fat Sick and Nearly dead was pretty good but its a better sell to people already overweight.

What finally got me to go though with it was Forks over Knives -> [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053ZHZI2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=loghomcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0053ZHZI2"]Forks over Knives[/ame] which is basically a vegan documentary. After this movie and the other stuff I have seen in the last month. Ive decided to start juicing and try a 95% vegan diet for the new year.

Shit like "In the US 1 in 2 Men will get some form of cancer" and by 2020 70+% of the population will be overweight etc etc etc. I have seen all kinds of stats in various shows and readings have finally convinced me to change shit up. Scary shit.

So all you juicing guys.. how about some updates? How was your detox? Also go on Netflix or whatever and check out Forks over Knives its very well done.

After Mortal invited me to a Fork Over Knives screening in Toronto, I made the biggest change in lifestyle to a whole foods plant based diet. I started with a 30 day detox, with mostly fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Despite being from Alberta (which is the equivalent of Texas) where I was conditioned to eat tons of dairy and meat, I've been 95% vegan for the last 6 months and have really noticed a change physically and mentally. I play competitive squash and run 3-5 miles 2x week. I'm putting up personal best record times on the running (down to 7.5 min/mile) and my recovery from all activity is faster. Now, I'm down about 15 lbs, even though I eat all day long and I have tons of energy. Biggest problem I have is actually sitting down for longer period of time, since I get restless easily due to increased energy. You also avoid the ups and downs from energy drinks and processed food with sugars.

Since this is a thread on juicing, I thought I'd throw in a Choco-Kale smoothie recipe, that I invented this morning (I know its not exactly juicing), but I'm at the blending all kinds of different things stage. I'm using a Kitchenaid Architect blender[ame="http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-5-Speed-48-Ounce-24-Ounce-Accessory/dp/B003WIZ5DE/ref=pd_sim_sbs_k_1"]Kitchenaid Architect blender[/ame] which destroys anything you put in it.

INGREDIENTS:

- 6 ice cubes
- 1 banana
- 2 handfuls of frozen kale pieces (just keep them stored in the freezer in pieces)
- 1 cup of Soy Mint Chocolate Milk (Vitasoy Organic brand)
- 3 frozen Strawberries
- 2 spoons of maple peanut butter (Peanut Butter & Co. brand)
- 8-10 raw, unroasted almonds
- 1 heaping spoon of organic Chia Seeds

Makes this...

Nice job man. Hope you like it.

Nice man, great fucking work! That's awesome. Having a healthy routine like that is excellent. I'm a big fan of smoothies too, I have a Magic Bullet (those as seen on tv ones) and it works awesome, basically the same thing as above.

One of my "smoothie" recipes is 1 banana, 3-4 ice cubes, unsweetened soy milk, teaspoon of peanut butter, protein powder. Shit comes out awesome, really satisfying/fast meal for in the morning.

Kale is my favorite, that shit gets you high.

This. I never juice without using some kale. It really does give you a good high. The first time I ever ate kale chips i felt weird as fuck, and sure enough I called up my girlfriend and she felt the same.

+1 for bee pollen as well

Took back the Breville Juicer today, that thing was way to loud to use. Like twice as loud as the vitamix on high. It worked great but no way i was going to keep it, maybe if I had a house and not a condo.

So after talking to the people at the store I ended up with the OmegaVert 350HD mentioned earlier in the thread. Its whisper quite compared to the breville, warranty is 10x longer, and it can do greens and nut milks. You get a little more pulp but I am ok with that as the only down side.

That's a masticating juicer right? Those are way slower/quieter and make a better quality juice supposedly.

Yeah it says it is 80RPM compared to like 15K from the Breville. Its got this auger in the middle and it just bites and chews up everything. Because of this it can do almonds, wheatgrass, and leafy greens better (so they say). Feed it in the top and the thing grinds it down to pulp. It does make a kinda nasty chewing sound but better than than the 747.

At risk of resurrecting a Zombie thread...

This thread really got me into thinking about juicing, etc, and my Breville juicer showed up today. I need to go shopping for veggies but we juiced a few apples tonight and I was pretty surprised at how good the apple juice was. I don't normally like apple juice - but this actually tasted like apples.

Looking at doing a 10 day reboot, and going from there. I'm 6' and 260 pounds, so dropping 60 pounds in my goal this year.

Just bought a juicer today
can anybody share any recipes or point me in the right direction please on what do juice and what do BUY to make the juice and how to prepair it thanks

Started going back on a semi-juice fast (just one small meal in the evening with the family) and am loving it. So much more energy it's insane.

Interesting thing happened to me while shopping though. Went shopping at Krogers today and was kind of bitching to myself how expensive fruit/veggies etc. are. Came across the stocker guy throwing a couple pears away because they didn't look perfect. Asked him what he did with them and of course they are just throwing them out.

So I just checked if he would mind putting the blemished pears and apples to the side for me and I'll buy them at $0.10 a pound? Heck yeah... at least we'll get something for it!

So.... now I get cheap produce and they don't toss it all.

I really don't give a crap if it's perfect... it all gets ground to hell anyway! Just a thought...

I used to blend fruits and veggies like this. Having read this thread, I'm going to start again. Plus nutritional brewer's yeast, a little organic catsup, cardamom, cinnamon, honey if needed, broccoli, and soy milk.

Are those seeds in that banana?

Okay I've decided to move on up to a blender. What should I get in the $500-700 range? Also can anyone post a recipe for making almond milk that won't kill you (cyanide)?

It's probably easier to just buy Almond Milk. Most major grocery chains stock it now.

Ironically I also recently watched Sick, Fat, and Nearly Dead a couple weeks ago after my dad recommended it to me. Here's another video you should all watch:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLjgBLwH3Wc]TEDxIowaCity - Dr. Terry Wahls - Minding Your Mitochondria - YouTube[/ame]

For me, this video helped me figure out exactly what to include in each green smoothie and end up with a complete, balanced diet. I'm planning to do this 100% raw food.

After much research, here's what I ended up with as my plan:

- Every smoothie has three parts: (1) Leafy greens, (2) Sulfur rich vegetables, and (3) Bright colored fruits. This creates a balanced smoothie, and is the main source of macro and micro nutrients throughout the day. You need BOTH insoluble and soluble fiber to create a smoothie that doesn't taste like sand water.

- I am blending everything, not juicing. If you're going to go 100% raw, I think you should blend. Use a juicer if you're going to supplement your normal diet.

- Getting all those fruits and vegetables is going to supercharge your life for sure, but if you're doing this 100% then there are a few other things you should include: hemp protein, flax seed, wild caught salmon, brazil nuts, almonds, dulse seaweed, and [possibly] a zinc supplement. Why? See below.

- Vegetarian diets are most commonly deficient in: protein, iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and iodine. Well, leafy greens have a shit ton of iron. Just 2 or 3 brazil nuts per day gives you more than your RDA of selenium. One can of alaskan wild caught salmon gives you all the vitamin B12 and D you need per day. Seaweed gives you all the iodine you need. Almonds, flax, hemp, and salmon give you protein plus all the omega 3-6-9 fats you need. You should already have enough zinc from the fruits/veggies, but it wouldn't hurt to take a supplement.

- *IMPORTANT*: Make sure you rotate through your leafy greens. I.E. don't always have kale, or always have just one type. Otherwise your body can build up too much of one type of alkaloid.

- Leafy Greens = kale, spinach, collards, swiss chard, turnip greens, dandelion greens, romaine lettuce.

- Sulfur rich veggies = cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips, rutabaga, radishes, collards, kale, asparagus.

- Bright colors (and fruits): Beets, carrots, peppers, peaches, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, any kind of berries, bananas, mango, kiwi, apples, lemon, etc. Basically any kind of fruits or brightly colored produce.

- The doctor in the above video also said she had grass fed beef daily, and organ meet once per day (heart, tongue, liver, gizzards, etc). I'm unsure yet whether I'll be doing this. But like I said I am including salmon in my diet.

- Finally, some things to be sure NOT to eat: milk (yes, MILK, even "organic" brands), soy, corn, potatoes, ANYTHING dairy. These are all HUGE no-no's if you want to join the health bandwagon. This also means *NO* to whey protein.

Follow the above points and you'll be off to a good start. Also, I'll save you some time on some of the difficult-to-locate items:

Just made an AWFUL smoothie from leftovers in the fridge:

3 handfuls romaine lettuce leaves
4 sticks of celery
2 carrots carrots
2 apples
6 brussel sprouts
6 strawberries
1 handful of blueberries
1 clementine

Fucking nasty! lol

Here's my favorite so far:

3 leaves of kale
1 apple
2 bananas
4 brussel sprouts
1 handful strawberries
1 handful blueberries
3 cups water
1 handful of ice

Care to share any recipes you guys like? For the most part I toss in random foods from each of the categories I outlined in my above post and *most* times it turn out well.
