Cruises Any Good?

Both my mom and my girlfriend's parents LOVE cruises. My mom loves the casinos. She'll do the repositioning cruises of the Alaskan ships at the end of the summer season for like $300 from Vancouver or Seattle to LA, then they'll either just fly back, or go to Vegas for a few days. They dig it. I can think of a bunch of other ways I'd prefer to spend a vacation.

Been on a 7 day... and I'd much rather just fly somewhere and be at the destination the whole time. The best part was getting off the boat. So why not just cut out the boat part.

Make sure you don't go with anyone who might harbor some ill feelings toward you. If you get tossed overboard, you're toast. No one will see you floating in the ocean.

If you want the cruise of a lifetime go do an Alaskan Cruise. One of the most beautiful things you will ever see

Google Holyship. It's a blast!

They've only done it twice. Went both times and booked for next year too!

This thread has reminded me that I've wanted to take a transatlantic cruise for as long as I can remember.

I'm not too interested in bouncing around from port to port and rubbing elbows with tourists from Peoria, but the idea of steaming across the Atlantic ocean is fucking exciting as hell to me.

If you think about it, it's the kind of experience that used to be commonplace, and isn't really anymore, which is probably why it's so appealing to me.

I want to look at a map, and see all that blue, and say..."yeah, I was in the middle of that once"

tl;dr bucketlists are gay, but Ice has one, and a slow boat to china is on it.

Find a good ship and a good group of friends (or family) to go with. Most of the stops are pointless and a waste of time, so most of your fun is on the boat. A lot of the time you're at the port for weird hours 10am-4pm, where there's really nothing going on besides people trying to sell you stuff. You don't get to go to local restaurants and (good) bars during those hours, which is most of the fun stopping at Caribbean islands. I've had a lot of fun on the ships, and most of the shows are entertaining enough that kept me from leaving, and generally the comedy shows were good.

You need to remember you're on a "mass tourist" trip, so the quality of almost everything is going to drop, but usually still pretty good, where as if you did it yourself and went to local spots on islands, traveling by your own plans.

It can be a good trip, or a terrible trip depending on what you make of it.

An all inclusive resort is good too, but generally I don't like being tied down to one place for too long.

Royal Carribean was great. My family and I went on those Royal Carribean twice. Its really good for families, but also fun for those just looking to go and relax and drink. Would you be going alone? With your GF/Wife/BF/Gay lover? Any kids? Need more details to determine if a cruise (and what type of cruise) is best suited for you.

And to the dude above me that said you can't do local stuff and the ports.. that's only if you stick around the cruise ship area.. All that is is peopple trying to sell you stuff, you're right. But dude, go into town or the next town over and you can have a blast. My dad was wanting to explore haiti with the 4 of us, (older sister, mom, and me) and I was like 12 at the time and we just rented some local taxi guy to drive us all through the unseen portions and shit.. it as crazy as fuck! He showed us the sketchiest parts and like was blowing his horns at people begging and shit.. then my mom got freaked out and we went to some less sketchy places... but yeah, you can have a blast and really get to know the local areas if you just get a little creative.

As for buying shit at the ports.. Its dirt cheap on most of those port stops, obviously. So be sure and bargain with everyone. I didn't quite grasp how desperate these people were when I was that young and I paid like $1 for an intricately carved walking stick (priced at $15) and felt great about myself because I was such a good negotiator (yeah right, that motherfucker needed food).. Felt kinda bad about that when I reflected on it a few years later.. Thanks dad for cheering me on as I got the price down to almost nothing saying "Thats how you do business".. Ha, good times though.

nausea, norovirus and power outages. sign me up lol

Do you have balls?

I mean, it is one thing to say that you don't like the sea, don't like mass turism, don't like getting seasick, etc.

But worrying about dying in a place when it is more likely that you will die in the car on the way to the ship. Hell, it is more likely you die in your fucking shower.

Grow a fucking pair man. Accept the fact that you are going to die and there is nothing you can do about it, so enjoy your life without living like a fucking pussy. Hell, even the average pussy has more balls then you are displaying with that wimpy post.

I really like cruises. Carnival does have more "Walmart shopper" type people because they often have the cheapest deals, but it has never bothered me enough to completely avoid Carnival. I want to try Celebrity next though.

I also sleep great in the cheap inside cabins like AdHustler mentioned because they are completely dark. Most of my time awake is spent outside of the room anyway.

I stopped booking excursions through the cruise lines after my first cruise. If you search online you can find websites to book them for less money and the groups are often smaller. I booked a horseback tour with just my group of 4 and a local guide for about $30/person plus taxi fare to the ranch at a stop on my last cruise while the official ship horseback excursion took a much larger group all together for $89.99/person. Just roaming around exploring the city and/or island can be fun too.

My wife and I love cruises. We're alternating yearly between a cruise and backpacking holiday and are going on our 4th cruise in 3 weeks. It's a Norwegian cruise with Royal Caribbean. Our first 3 were with MSC Cruises twice and Celebrity Cruises once. Great experiences all around.

If the comfort of having your own room and being in a different place almost every day appeals to you, you like good food, enjoy being pampered and you don't mind being in a place with a lot of other tourists, then you'll probably love it. I find that you get a lot of value for little money, UNLESS you go on excursions regularly or visit the casino's often.

For cheap prices, go to Discount Cruises, Last Minute Cruises, Cruise, Cruise Line, Cruise Vacation
I wish I found out about that site a few months earlier, would have saved us over $500 on our next one.

I loved my first one.. Royal Car, but the ship was a bit older.. The best part isn't really the cruise though, it's visiting all the destinations and going off into the islands/places. I don't think I'll ever go on another, I've come to love Vegas.. So all future trips will be there, until I get burnt out.

Cruises are pretty much the bomb for family trips if you go with the right line.

+1 more for Royal Carribean.

I've never done Carnival and thanks to this thread I never will.

I'm terrified of heights (funny because I used to repel from helicopters in the Army, guess the fear set in with age) and I can't swim very well. Yet I had a blast because there is so much to see and do on cruises that you forget you're on a boat. You feel like you're at a huge indoor resort. Great food, a party every night. I really don't get the people complaining about being "on a boat" most of the time like it's a bad thing.

For those listening to those people, you have to realize they're leaving out an important bit of info... You spend most of the daylight hours at a nice destination doing tourist shit like swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, jet skiing, or just kicking it on the beach getting wasted and at night there is plenty entertainment, great food, pool parties, shows etc. Then by the time you wake up it's time to start getting ready to leave because you'll be in port in about an hour.

Not to mention the fact that you get to visit different places and your hotel room follows you to every one of them!

A cruise probably isn't for you if you're just interested in enjoying the nightlife at the different ports. (though there is plenty of gambling, dancing, and mingling to be done on the ship!)
