Do you rent an office?

I'm probably just going to get another/smaller unit in the same apartment building or get one of those modular sheds and stick it on the same property. No need to physically walk/travel more than a really long time to get in the mood to do work.

It's like having your farming fields 10 miles from your house because you don't want to get distracted.

I dont even wanna ask what those stains are in front of the chair on the floor... gross

Not sure yet, but that rug looking mouse pad is hot shit. ROFL.

I think it's clever if you have a fan to air you're balls out at least.

I went through this exact same thing - I built a standalone office in my backyard which has also restored my work:life balance (and ability to be on the phone w/ kids in the house!), however had I not opted to do this I would have office space- in fact prior to starting construction this was my plan.

For me however the break even on costs was about a year and I figured there was no sense in adding a commute back into my life just for the sake of it.

But I'm married and boring. If I were single I would probably have office space solely to get out and meet/talk to people.

Did you use Lifehacker's office/shed template? I'm thinking about giving this a go whenever I end up getting out of the dorm room and out of apartments into an actual house.

College living for the loss.

We just got an office a little over 2 weeks ago. I have seen production increase and don't regret it one bit. In fact, I look forward to going to the office. :) Much better than a home office by far.

Where are you based dude? That sounds quite good value. West London where I am seems to be £300~ish.

Edit: in fact for three people more like £700
Yeah, drive for about 3 hours up the M1 and everything starts getting a bit cheaper!

Wouldn't actually like to try and fit three people in her. I would move on quickly if I needed a third pair of hands on a regular basis.

I think it depends what type of person you are. I'm way more productive working in an office. I found a place with a range of $115-400 a month (depending on size) - have room for about 2 desks and some walk around space to stretch my arms. Its private. Receptionist provided, like 20-25 other small business offices in my area. Coffee room is shared.

I think most of us get into these types of jobs so we won't have to go to an office. At least I did. I'd rather work 16 hour days from home than 8 hour days in an office.

Huge ditto on this one for me. Couldn't agree more. Plus to me, it's all about self discipline once you have a quiet area in your home for yourself (if you have a family). If I was single, this wouldn't be a problem. However...

I have a stay at home wife and 2 kids, suffocating doesn't come close to describing it.

Every 3 months I have to talk to the woman and tell her 8-5 means no interruptions, period. If you don't have a sitter for the kids, you can't go out until 5 when I can be done. Then of course I get to work 3-5 more fucking hours later that night because the woman 'needs her personal time'.

Dude, I hear ya and feel your pain. I'm in the same boat with the stay at home wife and 2 kids. They "know" they're supposed to leave me alone while I work, but something always seems to come up where they need my attention. And women have their ways of getting it... :love-smiley-085:

In the next house we're moving to though, my office will be down in the basement unlike now where it's close to the kitchen and hallway on the main floor. Way too much distraction potential.
