I don't know what it's like in the US, but over here, I've not met anyone IRL who know anything in depth about websites/seo. Even "pros".
Thats because SEO's and internet marketers in general are still a tiny minority compared to the population of a country. Its no surprise to me that most people i meet don't know jack shit when it comes to internet marketing, because most people dont do it for a job. All they are interested in is Facebook and buying shit online. Fuck, i know about 3 people in my town who are interested in IM, but it's not a shock because i don't walk around asking every person i meet what they do for a living.
And i don't know what "pro's" you are reffering to, but there are plenty of professional web design / seo / internet marketing companies operating in the UK, and per capita is probably inline with most of the developed countries.
The "internet" is still very much a new thing over here, people still get their internet through ADSL ffs.
UK is so fucking backwards in terms of tech it's unreal.
The internet is very much a new thing over here??. Are you being serious? I've had the internet in Scotland for almost 20 years.
The reason most of it is ADSL based is because of the huge amount of small towns, it's simply not cost effective to 'cable' up many places in the UK. Most cities however offer cable, or nowadays fibre optic connections.
In any case, 20mb connections are not uncommon over a DSL line, which is quite decent in comparison to other countries. The UK actually rates higher in average internet connection speeds than the US, and many other countries. (not surprising considering the huge area the US covers).
The UK might not be as advanced in 'tech' as some other countries, but it's nowhere near as bad as you make out. Maybe you live in a fucking hut in John 'o Groats or something though....

RE: Dragons Den... I cringed when the dragons were quizzing the lady over how she got her .com domain, and if she owned the 'source code' or not. It just goes to show, that the dragons never have to deal with this kind of shit, it's what they have employee's for. It still doesnt make it any easier to listen to when they pretend to know wtf they are talking about though.
