Erdogan is done. 1 million people protesting in Istanbul, city is a battlefield.

Ohhh, fuck... Turkey going under Sharia law is about as likely as the US National Guard going door to door in the US to confiscate guns. It's just not gonna happen. Turkey is one of the most modern and progressive Muslim states in the world, so imposing Sharia law on a population of over 70 million like that overnight just ain't feasible.

Don't worry, your women won't be wearing burkas or be banned from receiving education anytime soon.

My point wasn't purely about Sharia law, but Turkey drifting away from being a secular state, and nobody said anything about it happening overnight.
You may want to read up on Erdogan and the last decade of Turkey.

And your last comment, well, we leave it at that.

It's a bit premature called Erdogan "done." People in the countryside are far more conservative than in Istanbul, and this group is the majority that put Erdogan into office. He's been trying to erode Ataturk's secular traditions and shove Islamic law down everyone's throat.

It may be premature, i give you that, and yes, its a well know fact that Erdogan came into power by buying votes in the countryside and spouting islamic bla bla.
But let's look at Turkeys history and special relationship with it's military.
Since Atatürk established the modern Turkey, there have been 4 times the people rose up and overthrow their government, each time with the help of the military. In Turkey the people love their military, had it helped them each time overthrow a abusive government.

Saturday night, when police charged and there where numerous injured, some military units left their barracks and pushed back police so emergency service could arrive.
Erdogan has no friends in the military after his cleanup the last decade, this is a well known fact. There are still more then a dozen high rank officials in prison.
The same goes for the press. After China, Turkey is the country with most reporters jailed. No friends there either.
I dont know, but i think it will be very difficult for him to put this Jin back into the bottle.

Fuck religion. Religion spoils everything.
+1

That said, in March I saw many uncovered women in Istanbul that may or not have been tourists. Alcohol was freely available in restaurants, etc. I hung out mostly in the oldest part of the city, Sultanhamet, an area with many religious relics and institutions. Taksim Sq. is the more urban, modern and European part of the city, so I'm not surprised the insurgency started there.
Like Kiopa pointed out correctly,it is probly the most modern and progressive muslim state in the world.
Womans are uncovered, depends on family and social status mostly, but is not enforced by the state. Alcohol was freely available, this changed with recent laws, among other things.
But like you pointed out, things are very different between Istanbul/Ankara and the countryside.

But all in all we were a bunch who sat down with our friends in a park who read books, sang, and shared sandwiches.

Yea had a few turkey sandwiches :P Then a group decided to borrow this and deal with those damn trucks that keep spraying water on people....They were chasing us...Now we chase them :321:

isnt the leader of turkey a democratically elected official?
If he is, then i dont get it.

He is....However most of the elections are rigged (dead people somehow manage to rise from their graves and vote) His party keeps giving out incentives to business owners who gets their workers to vote for him...There is soooo many shady deals that i can list but I'm not going to...Lets just say he gets all his tips and secret sauce from Obama :)

Since we have a couple Turks in here, I'm actually curious. How strict is Turkey in accordance with Islamic law? I was always under the assumption it was pretty close to Malaysia, but maybe I'm wrong.

For example, wearing a burka is optional and up to you, woman are allowed to show their hair, vote, hold government positions, etc. Alcohol is widely available. Some things are still forbidden, like public affection is a big no-no, married or not.

For all intents and purposes though, if you're hanging out in Kuala Lumpur, you're not even going to know it's an Islamic state. Same goes for Singapore. If you get out of the cities and into the more conservative areas though, it's a bit different. There's religious police around, and for example, they can do things like if they see you take a woman home, they can swing by and request to see a marriage certificate.

Is Turkey about the same, or am I wrong on that?

Istanbul is pretty modern but this is what most are trying to defend, the PM is trying to make shove his islamic law down our throats, he keeps stating that he is PRO-secular but actually he isn't...I'm a muslim, but i'm not "his" type of muslim...There are people here that actually kiss your ass if your the part of AKP, but it's so weird. What i'm trying to say is, i grew up in the states and have been here for a few years. This country is really not like any other country i have ever seen. One street you'll see belly dancers, people having a good time drinking, talking and the usual fun...And go two blocks down you'll hear extremists praying in their homes. Before AKP we were even more secular and right now most want that back, but these guys have infiltrated every level of government. There are a dozen high positioned military officials who are jailed because they were believed to try and perform a Coup'd'eta on AKP in 2007-2008.

He has made sure to censor the media as well because while the people are protesting we have penguin documentaries playing on T.V. Most people here seem to know about the State Ataturk created, we need that back. Most see it as highly improbably for a country like Turkey to become ruled under sharia law but you would not believe the latest laws that passed our parliament, there are congressmen in the parliament who are there just to keep their mouths shut and give a yes vote to everything AKP decides. I did my best to keep away from the politics in this country but this is way too much to handle. I mean the Police brutality here and how your able to bribe your way out of problems has really become just incredibly shocking. The way the PM demeans his own citizens is shocking, The Prime Minister spoke today and said that we are (the protesters) are just a bunch of plunderers and should be hung from the trees that we were trying to protect in the first place. It's not about just the trees anymore this thing has taken a complete different life of it's own, We believe Erdogan has to go...We will sit in parks, on roads, he could pepper spray us to death....Those people you see damaging things and ripping out stones from the ground are not the people of Istanbul, those provocateurs are maybe 100 out of 15,000 peaceful protestors, they are the types that just come to ruin things. Don't believe your media either i mean ours is horrible, but yours isn't exactly all rainbows and butterflies either :ticking:

If he is, then i dont get it.

Erdogan doesn't get it too.

The democracy in Turkey is for 1 day for every 4 years (election day). Other than that it's dictatorship, fascist pig erdogan.

The prime minister is pushing his luck that's basically what's happening, if he had apologized for the police brutality and his overall arrogance I'm sure things would have calmed down by now. Right now all over turkey there are protests against him suggesting he should resign, the cops are still at it with their gas and rubber bullets, but the people are not backing down. Maybe tomorrow things might cool off a little bit, because It is a religious day, Commemorating the beginning months of Ramadan, but overall people want to be heard...We are trying to avoid a civil war at all costs but our dearest prime ministers comments almost make it seem like he wants a civil war to break out....
