Erdogan is done. 1 million people protesting in Istanbul, city is a battlefield.

this erdogan fellow seems like a punk. hopefully he'll be removed or at least keep the park

I like this site for Turkish news: Hürriyet Daily News | LEADING NEWS SOURCE FOR TURKEY AND THE REGION

Yesterday there was a columnist who said the people's demands aren't being broadcast. The government keeps a documentary about penguins on TV instead of reporting on the protests! It seems the insurgency is being spread almost totally via the internet, and the lack of coverage is pissing everyone off even more.

Unfortunately, this follows the same script as in Egypt and elsewhere. The protests are started and organized by younger more democratically and secular people, but if the powers that be fall, the only ones with any organization to fill the power vacuum are the radical muslims/brotherhood, but I hope I am wrong.

Istanbul is pretty modern but this is what most are trying to defend, the PM is trying to make shove his islamic law down our throats, he keeps stating that he is PRO-secular but actually he isn't...I'm a muslim, but i'm not "his" type of muslim...There are people here that actually kiss your ass if your the part of AKP, but it's so weird. What i'm trying to say is, i grew up in the states and have been here for a few years. This country is really not like any other country i have ever seen. One street you'll see belly dancers, people having a good time drinking, talking and the usual fun...And go two blocks down you'll hear extremists praying in their homes. Before AKP we were even more secular and right now most want that back, but these guys have infiltrated every level of government. There are a dozen high positioned military officials who are jailed because they were believed to try and perform a Coup'd'eta on AKP in 2007-2008.

He has made sure to censor the media as well because while the people are protesting we have penguin documentaries playing on T.V. Most people here seem to know about the State Ataturk created, we need that back. Most see it as highly improbably for a country like Turkey to become ruled under sharia law but you would not believe the latest laws that passed our parliament, there are congressmen in the parliament who are there just to keep their mouths shut and give a yes vote to everything AKP decides. I did my best to keep away from the politics in this country but this is way too much to handle. I mean the Police brutality here and how your able to bribe your way out of problems has really become just incredibly shocking. The way the PM demeans his own citizens is shocking, The Prime Minister spoke today and said that we are (the protesters) are just a bunch of plunderers and should be hung from the trees that we were trying to protect in the first place. It's not about just the trees anymore this thing has taken a complete different life of it's own, We believe Erdogan has to go...We will sit in parks, on roads, he could pepper spray us to death....Those people you see damaging things and ripping out stones from the ground are not the people of Istanbul, those provocateurs are maybe 100 out of 15,000 peaceful protestors, they are the types that just come to ruin things. Don't believe your media either i mean ours is horrible, but yours isn't exactly all rainbows and butterflies either :ticking:

"his" type of Muslim, are the real followers of Islam.

No, I'm not Muslim, but I've studied the Quran, and the Hadith. Probably much more so than most people who say they are Muslim.

The Quran teaches that those living in the "house of peace" (such as middle eastern countries under Sharia Law), must forcefully go into the "house of war" and take it over, bringing it into Sharia Law.. . . there is no middle ground. Sharia Law for everyone, if you do not convert, it's death.

These people are not "radicals", they aren't "extremists", they are simply followers of Islam.

The leadership they have now is increasingly radical Muslim. The protests are about demanding a return to secularism, and that religion be kept out of government.

Yes, but isn't that also what people though Egypt was about? Freedom, democracy and secularism? How many people in Turkey favor Sharia? I am sure it is close to or maybe more than half. Remember the huge difference between west and east Turkey plus you've got the Kurds. It is not a homogenous country and has only been held together by the force of the Kemalist military. The West is basically built on the remnants of the Byzantine/East roman empire and the east is the typical caucasus poverty muslim society. So if Erdogan goes, be ready for the Kurds to start acting up and military dictatorship while muslim fanatics begin gaining ground because if this.

Not really. The army in Turkey will step-in if things get too far out of hand and they are 100% secularists drawing their views from Kemel Attaturk.

The main reason they are holding back at the moment is because that might play into Egy's hands who could then accuse them of all sorts of bullshit.

It's not a secret that the Army is helping the protesters behind the scenes with medical support, masks etc. I am sure that if the police had gone further, the Army would have come between the protesters and the police. Personally I hope they take over.
