I notice in hindsight that some days I'm extremely productive and others I basically sit around doing nothing. It's almost a sort-of momentum--once I get going, I'm really going, but if I don't get going, I never get going.

Thought about that for a sec and I figured I'd post a thread. What do you guys do for productivity? A lot of my friends basically say "get some self-control you fucking faggot!" which I agree with, but I'm sure there are little tips and tricks for real-world mood alteration/focus/etc.

Normally I drink a rip-it but those have little or no effect if I drink them every day. That and the momentum thing--I know if I get going I can maintain my pace more easily.

What do you guys do? Drugs? Outlook? I wish ripits had the same effect when used regularly.

Resist the urge to jerk off to 'clear your head.' You'll just end up falling asleep.

Also get some good headphones:

work out, shower, start work with no distractions

or

make a list the night before, number the tasks and put a time frame you think it should be done in, i find when i do this it works, the hard part it doing it every night before bed...

if your doing fuck all online, but still on the ciomputer, try to get away from the computer...theres no point in trying if you just keep doing nothing and wasting time...thats what i think anyways

For me personally it's a few things.

1. Passion. It's not always easy to be passionate about what you do. SEO, design, writing, etc can be pretty damn boring. I try to stick to what I enjoy and pay others to do the rest. (I like some forms of writing, I like networking with people and I like to pretend I know how to program.)

2. I have 3-4 specific goals every day that I force myself to do before doing anything else.

3. I set specific times to work, usually starting after a shower and lasting anywhere from 3-4 hours, usually longer, depending on what I have going on. But when I'm done for the day, I walk away.

4. I reflect on what I've done every day. I feel like shit on days I don't do shit.

5. For me personally, one of my biggest productivity killers is bars. I LOVE to go out and have fun. But anytime I have a hangover I'm worthless. So I keep myself in check. I guess know your weaknesses and attack them is what I'm saying.

6. Agreed with don't jack off. It drains your energy and also drives down your desire to hook up with real chicks (if you're single).

7. I work in 33 minute bursts. Heard it from Eugene Schwartz originally. But I set a timer, go balls to the wall for 33 minutes and then take a 15 minute break.

8. I like to test myself. Like "I'm going to earn $x amount in 2 hours" or "I'm earning enough to cover the rent today".

9. I reward myself. If I get more accomplished than I had planned, I'll do something fun.

10. When I am working, it's at 100% full stop. When I'm in the zone I swear I can get more done in an hour than I can in a day when I'm not feeling it.

11. I like having my back against a wall. I purposely make myself uncomfortable.

12. On your own shit, a good trick is to buy advertising for it in advance if possible. Then it's like a client project. You miss the deadline you fuck yourself out of money.

13. I primarily freelance for clients, and really feel a personal responsibility to do my best and make the deadline. Being accountable to other people is a big motivator for me.

14. When you're not moving it's hard to start. I'll tell myself "I'm just going to email this client" or "I'm just going to write 200 words" and once you get yourself in motion, it's really hard to stop.

15. Forums, FB, Skype, Email, AIM, etc are all HUGE time sucks. All necessary too. But I have times of the day where I'm unavailable on all fronts and focusing on production.

16. Take a vacation. I just did for 2 months. Just started working again a few days ago and I feel really motivated/recharged. I also take 3-4 day "mini-vacations" every couple of months, and make it a point to get away on weekends. Gotta take time to enjoy life.

And it's something I'm always working at.

Staying productive ain't easy. But it's essential if you want to be self-employed and successful.

^^^^ THIS. Absolutely agree, a while ago I became very self-aware of this, I've got very used to do nothing in the evenings.

Changing your habits is a really slow process, and depending how rooted your bad habits are, it may take a lot of your enery and focus just changing it back to something productive.

^ fuck year. What's the deal with 33-minute bursts of work? That's actually a productive strategy for you?

I just bought this shit: http://onnit.com/alphabrain after that thread I started where we all talked about legal alternatives to adderall.

Shit is pretty good, I'm moving lightning fast and getting a lot done. Got 3 days of coding done last night. Plus I feel fucking great, happy dude right now.

^ Thanks dchuk. Does it affect sleep? Effectiveness over the course of a few days/weeks? If it's just another caffeine sub I don't really care for it.

I notice a lot of people say avoid jerking off. How fucking long/many times are you guys doing it? Really, enough to ruin a days worth of work?

I think it was Tencentpiece (along with several others) that said do something for 5 mins and you'll continue with it. I'd have to agree, it's very true. That also works the other way around - Start surfing the web for 5 mins and it'll be 4 am before you know it.

Let me know if the effects wear off in a few days. The problem with most legal alternatives is that they build up a huge tolerance within a few days and your body no longer reacts the same as the first time.

Nature's Adderall is tons of water, healthy light food and regular sleep. On that note, almost no one does this but it seems to be the real key to getting in the zone. Also not having so many projects that you get pulled in 20 diff. directions. Having just one or two things that bring in cash and can be scaled (and be used to automate/fund the rest of your shit) is a great way to ease the transition into being productive each day.
