Welcome to the gravy train. I've been on this since January. I just saw this thread today...lol.

Downadup Virus (AKA Conflicker): 9 Million Windows Computers Already Compromised | Blippitt | Tech News | Affiliate Marketing

Better idea: Use a typo generator to come up with the most popular misspelling of the worm AKA Conflicker (notice the extra "L"), then optimize for that instead.

See where most of my traffic has been coming from here (why am I giving this away? I don't know)...

This thing is still wreaking havoc, by the way...

Conficker C Worm Hits VeriSign: Massive Data Loss | Blippitt | Tech News | Affiliate Marketing

...so an even better idea would be to not go out and buy a new domain name, but instead start a blog (if you don't already have one).

Post to it regularly. Build up authority. This takes time.

Then, when the next big thing arrives, you will be able to outrank most everyone else instantly instead of screwing around, trying to get your brand new domain name ranked.

Traffic has definitely died down today. Yesterday was my peak with around 3K unique visitors (most of it coming from organic search).

CTR to the offers was good, but they converted like shit for me. Fun little experiment though. Definitely will be trying to hop on something "buzzy" like this again, hopefully next time around I can monetize the traffic more effectively.

How bout you 1nspire?

My traffic is holding steady with 3200 unique visits yesterday and around 2000 today. This was without adwords since I blew through a Ben Franklin in a short period of time that I decided to halt the ppc a day earlier. Interestingly though after my stint with Wiki my link would appear and disappear in the last couple of days. Wiki proved to be the best source of traffic bar none.

I kicked ass with the Indonesian folk so I decided to add an auto translate plugin. The only problem is I have no idea if it really works since I don't live in Indonesia.

I had a 37% CTR with "Zero" conversions. I offered some trail software so hopefully I will see some Buck$ in 30 days.

I will provide some more info later this week.

All in all I grade myself as a fail. Not because I did not make a buck but because I believe I did not harness the full potential. 5000 uniques in a few days on a brand new site may seem good but looking at the sheer numbers that this hype created and I barely scratched the surface.

From an experience level, I gained a tremendous amount of information in a short period of time and my cost was minimal. Would I do it again, absolutely.

Trigatch keep those ideas coming.

In my mind there are two steps to making money:

  1. Generating traffic
  2. Monetizing traffic
Obviously, you have to think about the two simultaneously before diving into a project. However, I think this little project gives you a good idea about some unique ways to drive traffic. Over time you'll learn how to best monetize and what works and what doesn't. I couldn't predict how stuff in this niche would convert as I've never run it... so you everyone is always learning.

Furthermore I think that montydad5000 has a great point at building a site that isn't so narrowly focused. I would recommend doing this IN ADDITION to what you're doing with this mini-site. Point your conficker-c site towards your broader "virus" or "worm" site with links and BAM - your load for link hunting got a little lighter.

Glad to hear you found this valuable. Wish you woulda made some money - I would consider whoring your site out with adsense for 24 hours and see how that works. You know - big ass 300x250 ad right where you would expect content to be... that kind of thing. If you've made 0 thus far it can't hurt and you're pretty much guaranteed to get some clicks.

I'm now to the point where I can watch Analytics to see what keywords people are using to find my site, compare that with Google Trends, and then open the traffic dam within 30 minutes.

If you buy a new domain name every time something hot comes along, you are pushing a rock up a hill barefoot on wax paper.

Edit: If you're going to try and do something like that, at least do it on Squidoo and then OnlyWire it.

Anyone get infected?

My missus' laptop got it... Other than clearly using our bandwidth to start sending junk traffic, all it did on our side of things was pop up a message box once every 20-30 tabs trying to convince her to buy the bullshit "conficker removal software" that was "guaranteed" and only "$19.95 with your credit card or PayPal"...
Considering how many people fell for the XPAntivirus scam in 2008, I'd say they're going to clear an easy million from this one before the end of next week.

Actually, in retrospect, that could simply be another douchey scam that's cashing in on, but not related too, Conficker.

Oh, ya. I already do that with the WhyDoWork plugin for posts older than 5 days. Thanks for the tip though.

Although, ATM Hostgator brought my site down for excessive CPU usage and advises that I "install the WP-Super-Cache plugin". Bastards. Who would have ever expected a site to actually have a lot of traffic? lol

Now I've got to get her back up.

Actually, it seems that they've had a policy change of sorts. I got a site shut down not even 3 days ago for something similar with no escalation in traffic.

Please get as high up and suggest that their policy to immediately shut down accounts is an utter failboat. At least give us a chance to fix the problem before taking our income & site trust. That's the same thing as downtime and google frowns heavily on this .. I've had many sites deindexed for downtime in the past year.

Nice.

As for Hostfailer, er Hostgator, I've done that. I've also scheduled a nice little blog post to fire off around 10am tomorrow EDT.

I'm going to go read that Yahoo article.

Hey guys just thought I'd give you a heads up. Expect some Aussie traffic Sunday night (Australian time), and into next week, as 60 minutes is running a story on Conficker. Funny how we're a week late, even 2 weeks later than the American 60 minutes.

Hope you guys can really direct your efforts at pulling this Australian traffic that should come.

All the best, and keep us posted on how everything's still going. It's definitely an interesting case study.

edit: Here's the link to the story that will be shown this Sunday night. http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=799745
