Had my house broken into yesterday. The fuckers stole 3 laptops, one digital slr camera and one digital video camera. They forgot to take the batteries and power source, so the laptops will be hard to fence, but still.

We're looking at adopting two dogs now. We live in a not-so-good neighbourhood and I'm just glad they broke in while we were out.

The funny thing is that I could actually smell perfume when I walked in the door. I knew someone had been there. It was really weird. Had an intense rush of adrenaline, picked up a hammer next to the door and checked all the rooms. Hearing from neighbours, I think they left about half an hour before I got home. They left by foot and probably took a train from the train station. We have a pretty good description of them and a short time line, so we are hoping to get it all back.

What really pisses me off is that I had just put the finishing touches on a new campaign to launch that afternoon, but now it's all gone. No backup.

They only stole lappy's and Camera's ...seems like some educated gadget geeks..
You can now buy some inhome spy camera's and install them (since you've other cams, invest in these too).

Be sure to monitor Craigslist for the next week to see if they pop-up there.

That's where the crack-heads in my fair city take them. (or they sell them to losers who then take them to craigslist)

If you see them posted - email an offer twice what they're asking. When you meet them in person....... You know what to do.

And/or get better security.

That fucking sucks ass.

What's the description? I'm guessing female, 5'2", huge rack, brunette, mini skirt, tight beater, likes it in da butt?

We were hoping to adopt a retired police gsd, but we've been on a waiting list for so long now that I think it'll never happen. Next option would be a couple of Heinz 57 adopted from RSPCA or perhaps a labrador from the nearby guide dog training centre.

I don't really know what the chick looked like, but it doesn't really matter. She may have been hot, but I still would have hit her in the head with the hammer if I walked in on them.

Heh.. Or maybe not, but what do you do in a situation like that. I mean if you walk in on someone who broke in to your house. If you have them cornered in a room or something. I'm about 1.85m and 95kg and I was wearing a big motorcycle jacket and a hammer. That would make me look very threatening. Definately getting two dogs!

What if my girlfriend walked in on them? That would have been completely different.

I'm sorry they stole your shit. I hope you find them and your stuff, recover your campaign.

Home invasion and burglary is why I never leave the house.

I dunno, what's the law say in Australia? If you were to do that in the UK you'd probably get arrested for a number of things and thrown into prison.

Even on the home computer, I keep the passwords and important stuff encrypted. I'm not so huge on the backups, like we all should be.

The dog is a great idea. The only time our house has been broken into is when our dog passed away. A good alarm system that switches on Cameras when armed with back to base monitoring works well, or even some dummy cameras.

Also remember to let your neighbhours know about the new dog or the kid next door who jumps the fence to get his cricket ball back ends up stuck in a tree house for hours.

Don't know how safe my shits are but here's what i have:
-dropbox, save all kind of documents. easy to disable any PC or change password if your shit got stolen.
-lastpass, better than roboform and FF password management.
-foxmark, for bookmarks
-and last one, external HD for p-rn and movies, music.

I'm sorry they stole your stuffs. What would i do if i run into them? I'm not that strong physically so i'd probably run off and let them take whatever they want. You might be able to get it back later. I'm not gonna put my life at risks (what if...scenario) just for some pieces of metals. I'm a pussy, i know.

our house got broken into couple years ago.. they also went for electronics and some jewelry..

most of the time they arent caught as the police department didnt do much besides check for fingerprints

we ended up getting our stuff back through insurance..and also got an alarm system that calls the police incase of a break in so it doesnt happen in the future

You more than likely got robbed by some kids. Real burglars go for the higher priced stuff like jewelery and guns, while petty thieves don't want to deal with off loading merchandise so they only go for electronics. Seriously though, buy a couple cameras online - it'll cost maybe a couple hundred, but it's well worth it.

Erisch: Dude, that blows. Especially because Brisbane's meant to be pretty good on burglary rates compared to other cities. You're not living in FortitudeV, are you? I was there for 4 months and got broken into twice. Moved out to Fitzgibbon for the rest of the year then went to Sydney.
Home security wise, dogs are awesome. Haven't had a single B&E since I got mine. Also a cricket bat by the front door looks totally normal, so no one thinks twice about it, and you can grab it on the way in if they didn't think to. Pointy side breaks bones ;)

mgore:
We don't have gun culture here. Anyone with a gun has to keep it locked in a certified safe, and that shit is checked up on by local cops every so often. It's the reason I had to give up my S&W when I moved to Melbourne. Landlord wouldn't let me install a safe.

Regarding the scenario of walking in on someone, I would much rather have them run away than actually having to try to fend for my life. And when I think about it, I doubt I would actually ever hit anyone with a hammer. Doesn't matter if it was within the law or whatever. Wouldn't want it on my sleeve. However, I think I looked quite intimidating in my big jacket and holding a hammer, and I think that would only make it worse if I ran into someone in my home.

Regarding the dog, we'll definitely contact the RSPCA to see if we can adopt a suitable dog. Hopefully two of them.

Backup of my stuff. I really regret not having proper backup in place. I actually have an external hd, I just didn't set it up properly. Personal photos, personal documents, years of uni work and so on all gone.

I will definitely setup a couple of cameras with motion detection. I just hope I remembered to renew my insurance....

Sorry to hear about that, that just plain sucks.

Regarding backups, try Carbonite.com - we use them and were actually put to the test 3 weeks ago when my main pc's hard drive failed. I got everything back in 2 days. Basically you pay them $50 a year and it uploads through the 'net whatever folders you choose, etc. so its backed up OFF SITE which is crucial. The best $50 I ever spent, I use it on all my PCs and I love it. (No, I am not getting any commissions or using a referral link, just giving honest appreciation for a great product). And its smart enough to recognize when you make changes to your documents.. so basically it synchs at night when you're off your computer automatically. Check it out.

A cricket bat sounds like a really good idea. I have a baseball bat next to my bed, but it's too far away from the front door.

I'm really interested in anything that would just prevent a burglary or anything like that. I'm thinking of putting up a couple of "protected by the big red machine" stickers in the windows or something. And if someone does happen to break in, I want to make sure that I have proper backups and even photos of the bastards.

This happened to me recently as well - lost a laptop and a bunch of electronic items. One thing I did is purchase a laptop lock and secured it to my desk - I had to drill a hole in the backing of the desk to fit it. It wont prevent someone who has tools and is really determined, but it will stop the hyperactive drug fucked crack head who smashed his way in and is looking for a quick swipe.

** edit - erisch, I see you're in Brisbane - this happened to me in Melbourne. I got the laptop lock from Office works for about $25
