Getting ripped and Paleo eating

50g of carbs a day is good for rapid weight loss but makes it a huge PITA tracking. Also kills energy levels especially if you're doing any exercise at all.

This. Do some of you knobs even lift? Been there, done that. Not good at all if you're lifting even a few days a week, you'll be dead on your feet.

I'm not saying I'm the leanest or meanest guy out there, because I'm not.

However I've come a long way from my fat ass of a year and a half or so a go. By cutting so many carbs you're going to lose a lot of weight by body water, and most of it will probably come back when you come off it.

Head over to Bodybuilding.com's forum fat loss section. Eat a calorie deficit, minimum .35g of fat per lb of body weight, minimum 1 g of protein per lb of body weight a day and fill the rest how you see fit. I use this and I lift 4-5 times a week, 5th day might be snowboarding or something. Currently on a cut and it's working like a charm.

Have you thought about doing any endurance sport at all?

I do cycling and running, mostly cycling and honestly it's even hard to keep up with my daily intake needs because of all the calories you burn.

It certainly does not help in bulking up but it will help you lose fat and look ripped better later on.

Paleo != Primal

Carb re-feeding is probably a good idea because the body adjusts and gains decrease over time.

As NNT says, it's probably better to smoke one cigarette a month than none.

Hormesis.

Why not keep it easy and just target a caloric deficit? Do some cardio and lifting and you won't have to starve yourself. Find something with a lot of fibers and you won't feel hungry that often (-> whole grain). Weigh your food if you are serious.

That's a great idea if you're only interested in weight loss and don't care about low energy, a number of digestive problems, limp dicks, poor productivity and just generally poor all around performance.

Anybody who wants to lose weight here for the sake of losing weight, unless you're 300 pounds or more should just re-examine what they really want.

I love the oxymoron of weighing your food when the diet itself sucks. It's like weighing shit. It's still shit.

I'm not trying to be mean but a diet that's calorie deficient on calorie dense grains of all things probably sucks. I'm all for easy obviously, but it should be easy and right at least.

Fuck fruits and vegetables.

WTF?

I know this paleo thing is the flavor of the month (year?) fad diet and I'm pissing against the wind by not touting it's unprecedented awesomeness but whatever... just want to share my 2 cents about fad diets in general.

These are just personal observations but most of the people I know who think <insert fad diet> is the best thing since sliced bread had a very shitty diet to begin with.

So yeah... if you drink 10 sodas/day and eat shitty food, *any* change represents progress.

If you go vegan, you'll feel better.

If you go paleo, you'll feel better.

... and so on.

You'll feel better because you had a very shitty diet to begin with, not because the fad diet you tested is the best choice for everyone.

Speaking of "best choice for everyone"... there's no such thing!

Most of you are marketers, so the concept of split testing should be at least vaguely familiar to you.

A lifestyle that works great for person A might be a bad choice for person B and so on.

Don't accuse people of being sheeple by agreeing with everything that's fed to them by mainstream info sources if you're guilty of the same thing... just that instead of blindly believing mainstream info sources, you blindly believe the people who are pushing the fad diet you're excited about.

I know it's easy to get carried away whenever you come across something like a diet that changes your life for the better, I'm often guilty of the same thing.

What I'm trying to say is that it might be a good idea to avoid extremes.

If you decide to eat more vegetables, great but don't go overboard like some dude on WF who said he's eating 10 carrots a day a few months ago.

Or if you decide to go paleo, don't go overboard like the guy I quoted by saying ridiculous things like "fuck fruits and vegetables"... try to avoid extremes.

... you get the point.

Sorry for the huge post <3

Sorry but half the people in this thread are confusing getting ripped with losing weight. If you don't have enough muscle, you won't ever look good.

OP give us our stats so we can actually give you advice.
Height + weight + EITHER bodyfat percentage OR waist and neck size (NOT collar size). Also tell us how much exercise you do weekly (if any).

I personally feel that a large proportion of guys out there aren't getting the results they want simply because they don't have enough muscle.

Some of you guys should read the China Study [ame="http://www.amazon.com/The-China-Study-Comprehensive-Implications/dp/1932100660/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359415350&sr=8-1&keywords=the+china+study"]China Study[/ame].

What's the point of getting ripped if you're gonna die of cancer at 40?

Casein (dairy protein) has been linked to all the worst possible diseases. (Results from a well funded 40 year study)

You hit the nail on the head! I am not concerned with losing weight I want to gain a fuck ton of muscle and be lean as shit.

I am 6' tall and weigh 195 with pretty much 0 muscle! I have never lifted a weight or really done any work out of any kind in my entire life. I do work outside and am on my feet moving all day so I guess that is what keeps me from getting huge fat. I basically have a small beer gut and then my arms are skinny as shit and my legs as well.

I want to learn as much as I can about nutrition and then I am either going to go to the gym and hire a trainer or convert my garage into a gym to start doing to some strength training.

I guess I was confused because in the OP you said you where in pretty decent shape. You are not. Unless you meant you can run a few miles and lift a bunch. But whatever, lets move on.

Well in order to get ripped and lean, you're going to have to cut eventually. You are in a good position that you aren't grossly over weight, but you have to take shit in phases.

Since you have no muscle you should go in to a bulk. Start lifting your ass off. Eat at least a gram of protein a day per lb of body weight. Most importantly you have to to eat a calorie surplus. As 'bulk' sounds, you're going to put on weight, and some of that is going to be muscle.

Just focus on lifting for a few months, and you'll start to bulk up. Then go in to cut to get rid of any extra fat when you feel you need a change. Honestly though you can lift probably several months before getting to that point.
