I'd say there's no preventing it, you just have to be ready for it.

My plan was always to hold onto my blue passport until it is officially too much of a burden. It's about 80% of the way there now, but it is still useful for travelling to lots of places that a Thai passport, which I don't even have yet, will let me go easily.
