But be that as it may, the WTC collapsed because the architects were trying to save money and weight by cladding the steel with dry wall (which shatters easily) and foam (which had flaked off years before but no-one did maintenance) rather than concrete as in the Empire State building. Cladding with concrete is expensive, partly because of costs of the material, and partly because of the weight which requires more steel girders to hold it. If you like, corporate America's urge to cut costs was the culprit.
