Please can you explain why he did that? I assume there was a very good reason for it, as he was probably doing what he's been trained to do.
How hard is it to understand? He and his
Lieutenant (that's kind of the important part here kids) started down the hill, as he described, towards the village at which point they came under fire.
One must assume, given that we don't have all the facts, that they observed the village for some time instead of blindly walking down said hill. He does look around at least once, including up the hill, and it's a pretty steep hill, probably 45 degrees with lots of loose rock. Not easy terrain to navigate and certainly not easy to run up. Especially when loaded down with gear.
So what's the best option?
Move as fast as you can in whatever is the easiest direction to move and try to find cover as quickly as possible. Choose the most efficient means of moving quickly because hitting a fast moving target isn't as easy as you might think. The aforementioned rock outcropping he passed offered no protection whatsoever, so he kept going until he found the best little nook he could try to squeeze himself into. Was it good cover? No, not really. But it was the best he could find while being shot at by a motherfucking machine gun.
There have been plenty of firefights in history won by those that choose to charge their attackers. It's not the most ridiculous strategy that everyone here is making it out to be. When you've got nowhere to go but forward, you go forward.
At the end of the day the guy wasn't actually wounded, he got hit 4 times and his equipment saved his ass. He probably had to change his underwear after the fact though. Lucky SOB.
