Hoarders. Who watches?

It is actually a disorder that can only be helped by therapy.
Just cleaning up the apartments leads to nothing - they'll just start again.

Basically, it is a fear of loss taken to the extreme.

i know a hoarder. it is a disease. you cannot just throw all the stuff away. it just comes back.its an unstoppable force. these people dont have the ability to let go. the fear of loss and making decisions debilitates them.

worst thing you found when living with him?

besides cats

let's see...

- The baby squirrel he took home because he wanted to care for it
- Cans full of dirt for his foam weapon hobby
- A crock pot that hadn't been cleaned after use for around a month

He'd hoard all kinds of things, one being old computers and electronics parts. We had probably around 50 1GB IDE hard drives sitting around on coffee tables, and more I can't remember offhand.

I mean in all honesty, he was a nice guy, he just hoarded shit and was a slob.

His girlfriend is most definitely the crazy cat lady though. The "I claim all of my ex boyfriends raped me, and will do it to you too if you leave me, and I'll say I'm pregnant when I'm not", type with around 15 or so pets in her house.

I DVR all the episodes and have watched a few, they are kinda long and somewhat boring but still interesting to see how nasty some peoples houses are.

One that made me sick was the guy who wouldn't get rid of any of his dogs hair because he thought it was keeping the dog alive. The floor was caked with like 2 inches of dog hair all over...fucking nasty.

Does anyone else watch for motivation? My home always ends up sparkling clean after watching something like this.

EDIT: I wonder if there is an opposite syndrome? When ever I start to feel stressed or out of control, I start throwing things away. Purging possessions. It's gotten me into trouble a few times, especially when it's not my stuff. heh. An example is pennies. I hate penny clutter and I usually end up throwing them away.

Funny you say that, I was just talking about that over coffee with my roommate this morning. Wonder how many pennies get thrown away in the US each year :x

thats pretty nasty, but i don't think if it beats over 100 dead cats, or the lady from this past week with an non functional toilet filled with her own shitty shiy

I don't know if there is an opposite syndrome or not, but I do exactly as you describe. Once a month or so I go through things and just start throwing them out. If we're not using something, I sell it, give it away or throw it away. "Stuff" costs more money through storage and maintenance than acquisition.

My ex gf's mother was a hoarder. The first time I went to the house I didnt know, I took 2 steps in then ran 20 back out and puked my guts out. It was the most horrible stench i've ever smelled. She had about 20 cats but that still wasn't enough to get rid of the 100's of mice. Shit piled everywhere, floor to almost ceiling in every room, rotting food all over the place, the fucken bathtub had 3 vacuum cleaners and a kitchens worth of pot and pans in it. Even her mini van was filled with shit and infested with mice. Definitely the most insane thing I've ever seen. :repuke:

It's definitely hereditary

I knew a family like that, actually put some of those episodes to shame. I saw 3 generations like that. I thought they were slobs at first but eventually I figured out that the stuff they kept was organized (loosely speaking) and had to do with their interests & jobs.

Over 2 million in the US ... that's approaching 1% which is quite an overwhelming number.

Some of my relatives make me question the levels of this misconception in one's brain... They don't take it to the point of making "paths" in their homes, but businesses are cluttered with shit everywhere. Apparently, things have "value" and they "might" need to use them someday.

Freaks me out and diminishes customer experience.
