If you don’t know what Four Loko is, you soon will. It’s a fruit flavored malt beverage that packs in to its aluminum walls the equivalent of 5 beers, and 3 cups of coffee. Mixing caffeine and alcohol isn’t anything new, we saw Lohan mixing Goose with her Redbull in 2008.
Before that, you’d be hard pressed to meet many people who haven’t heard of a rum and Coke. Four Loko is fundamentally different for many reasons, and it has created the perfect storm of popularity surrounding it. Consider the following, and you’ll know why Four Loko is on the path to popularity.
Price
You can buy Four Loko at your local bodega or gas station convenience store for about $2.50. It comes cold and ready to drink. The cans are not the tiny energy drink cans we’ve all become so accustomed to. They are 23.5 ounce aluminum monsters ready to unleash the beast inside of them. Not to mention, the cans are colorful. They’re meant to be seen, and be seen with. Walking around college parties for the last couple months Four Loko has gone from an oddity to a staple.
Stigma
You’ll often find that certain drinks have stigmas relating to gender. Smirnoff Ice, while delicious, doesn’t particularly bode well for your masculinity. Mikes Hard lemonade, though recently undertaking an ad campaign specifically targeting men, is still primarily a woman’s drink. Four Loko, largely fueled by the [accurate] perception that it’s an extremely powerful..............

I think its just human (or teenage) nature, tell kids something is bad for them and it makes them want it more ;-) All the kids that were hospitalized drew national attention.

Jeez, that's some shit propaganda right there. One can is equivalent to 5-6 beers? What? It's 12% and 1 pint. I can only imagine they're thinking of small bottles with low alcohol content or something.

It does sound like an ace drink for teens though. Reminds me of when I was a kid and we used to get in to nightclubs and get cunted on Thunderbird and Maddog 20/20 then puke and fight for a few hours. They were the days.

Just looking at the colorfulness of the Four Loko cans from a child's perspective makes me want to have a drink. In other words, I parent might buy that drink and their child maybe attracted to the colorfulness of the container, resulting in the child consuming the perceived tasteful beverage.

Yes, I'm sure teenagers are buying it for the colorful cans.

Volume of a Four Loko is twice as much as a standard 12oz beer. Beer is usually 4-6% ABV, or 2x-3x less than a Four Loko. Doing the math, it actually does end up being about 4-6 beers.

Also, I love this drink and the ban makes me very sad.

certainly not by tasting good. This dude had some at a tailgate once and I tried it. Its wretched. I'd rather drink Mad Dog mixed with coffee*

*not really

Apparently people forgot about Vodka and Redull. Four Loko is still legal here so I decided to buy one Sunday to see what the hype was, once I smelled it (it smells like ghetto-homelessness) I threw it in the trash.

You need to have a wood pallet to enjoy that stuff.

Redbull Vodka is hilariously expensive compared to Four Loko..

Its like the price of redbull, but you get free alcohol!

Why not? As a marketer you know it's all about packaging.

So this + caffeine + alcohol = Teenage Win

($2.50 + Large Dose of Alcohol + Caffeine) x 2 = $5 = Blackout Drunk for a good percentage of the college students = Teenage win.

I do understand your argument, but last year in college I drank about 5-10 different brands of alcoholic energy drinks, four loko was by far the best, and the main reason I got them was they were cheap, and tasted better than straight shots. I personally thought the watermelon four loko tasted amazing, If anything the colorful can kept me away from them at first, but I tried them after a few friends told me about four loko. It's one of the only alcoholic energy drinks that actually had a good taste. But for the most part getting completely wrecked, and depending on how fast they were drank blackout drunk, is the main reason I got them. That's the same reason most people get them.

It's like 1/3 the price of redbull, but you get free alcohol!
