I'm going to say never and hope I'm wrong. Once people get the scent of money it's hard to turn their heads.

The biggest lobbies against it are the Prison and Security industries. They make HUGE Bank on weed being illegal.

The correct answer to this question is: When the Prison and Secuirty industries no longer have enough money to influence our laws.

The private prison/security industry actually isn't very big, relatively speaking. the largest private prison company, corrections corp of america only has a market cap of $2 billion. that's probably how much profit a bank like goldman sachs could make in a year by underwriting the securities of a large marijuana operation. it's the federal government which profits the most from it being illegal.

1-5 years max. Its possible that no state will make it legal in the 2012 elections but at least one state will make it legal by 2016.

At least 16 new states have pending legislation or are predicted to have it on their upcoming ballots for medical purposes - http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=002481

Its likely that at least Washington, california, and michigan will have full legalization on the ballot this year.

In california, full legalization got 33% of the vote in 1972 and 47% of the vote in 2010. Its just a matter of time.

I'm pretty confident at this point that at least one state will pass full legalization in 2012, either California, Washington (not very likely IMO), or Colorado. Also heard good things coming out of Michigan, Oregon and Massachusetts even.

Honestly if the feds would have left a lot of these areas alone, California would probably vote NO in another close decision, just because the growers/dispensary industry people WERE fairly comfortable and BANKING. Therefore they did not want to open the floodgates of uncertainty with the whole medical/recreational distribution, lose their exclusivity in certain cities, etc.

They voted heavily AGAINST prop 19 in 2010 for this reason. Now, it is kinda funny because the raids keep happening (not just to the ultra shady places that deserved it, but over ridiculous zoning issues etc), they are hearing the schedule 2 issue in the supreme court, lots of counties are enacting outright bans, lots of city referendums have been circulated and petitions voted on, etc.

Basically things are not looking quite as peachy as the medical mj industry people envisioned it would back in 2010, even with all the cash they are bringing in. The industry is just not 100% stable as is, people are paranoid (hehehe) and I think THIS will actually push these industry people to vote for full legalization, thus adding a few percentage points and shifting the close vote to a YES in 2012.

If the US Government really didn't want California to legalize recreational in the 2012 election, they should have left the medical model alone the last few years. Regardless, I can only imagine the clusterfuckle that will ensue and the national dialog that will HAVE to come out of all this once a state does pass.

The REALLY depressing thing is that it is 20-freaking-12 and we still have to even "debate" this issue. The drug rehab industry stands to lose A LOT...imagine all of those "counselors" out of work, because they can't tell little johnny he is going to go on to smoke crack because he enjoys cannabis.

...it's the federal government which profits the most from it being illegal.
D'oh, I'd forgotten about that; the US Bureau of Prisons itself is the #1 profiteer on weed being illegal.

So this is strictly a case of abuse of power. Anywhere but in the Government this would be called a conflict of interests... If the USGov tightens the laws, the USGov profits more. FML.

...There is only one direction those laws can go in of course... Hope you guys like jail! Eventually every american will be a prisoner with that shit going on.

How long will it take for the 'greatest generation' + conservative 'boomers' to die off?

The Liberal Party in Canada was absolutely CRUSHED in the last elections, and the party has been left crippled. Historically, the Liberal Party has always done well, and if the present Conservative Government does not do well in the next 4 years, given that the population gave them a Majority Government this time around, look for Canadians to switch back. The Liberals have also announced that a major party platform for them will be the legalization of Marijuana, as it is no more or less harmful then tobacco or alcohol, puts a major strain on the prison system, and above all else, will be a good source of revenue and a good way to lure the younger demographics who don't vote.

its legal for medical use in around 16 states already.

Yep, legal here in WA.

1) Go to the "doctor", say you are depressed.
2) Get "prescription".
3) Carry a bag with you with almost no problems.

State cops can't do anything about it, feds can, legal by state but illegal by federal law.

We got a few "pharmacies" here, some get busted by feds every once in a while.
