How much debt do you have?

$3k in CC debt and around $17k in student debt.

The CC debt gets paid off in full each month and I don't pay off my student debt because in Aus it just gets fixed for inflation. Although I do have the money to pay that debt off in a separate account if I ever decide I don't want it there anymore.

Planning on buying an apartment outright at some stage, but Melbourne is such an over priced city at the moment I might just wait for a crash.

I had a car loan for 2 years just to build credit, but I've since paid it off. Should have kept it longer though, still can't fucking get approved for AMEX cards.

I'm trying to get a credit card. but everywhere i apply rejects me saying

"lack of credit history"

oh ya rly? I've never owned any creditcards before, how am i supposed to build my fucking credit score. BITCH,.

Have you tried bank of america? A few people I know have gotten approved with like $500 limits with no previous credit history.

surprised no one has said anything about owing the IRS anything. makes me feel bad :Z

I owe them a little over 12k still for 2k9 taxes(was 19k but been paying it off slowly). gotta pay that off soon! their interest rates are fucking NUTS and killin me. so many fees! it is very shady. I can see how a person could get trapped into never zeroing their owed balance just bc of the fees...

ever called up the IRS on phone? Lol the operators sound like the most boring/sad/braindead zombies on the planet!

...ever called up the IRS on phone?

I have actually found them to be suprisingly helpful. Always lol at the hold music - Nutcracker, every time.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h94BdxnheeM]YouTube - Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker Suite- Dance of the Reed Flutes[/ame]

I finally asked if that was a coincidence and the guy said no, it's actually an inside joke with those fuckers.

Put your own name on your cell phone bill, as well as utilities. Capital One also offered me a credit card for $300 when I was 17 so you should be fine.

In ~2004 I was strapped with $90k debt, but have paid it off since thanks to AM.

I've been totally debt free for over a year now and I am living with no other cards than my bank debit card and a Chase credit card @ 10% that I use primarily like an AMEX card that I can carry if I want to. -It comes in handy in many situations like when you don't trust the seller and want the option of dispute... You know, like when you've been led into some other WF user's evil ploy and signed up for a rebill... ;)

Debt is the civilized world's last remaining form of slavery, in every way that implies.

Smart people = Free
Dumb people = Slaves

Plain and simple... Just not simple enough for most dumb people to understand.
(I can talk; as I said I was 90k in myself once!)

Personally I'm debt free, but that's quite a generalization there young jedi

best feeling in the world when you pay it all off, and you get that same mini buzz every time you realize that you're still debt free

I have to agree that debt is slavery, but thats all I agree on with his post.

AMEX is a charge card, not a credit card, that means they are not offering their customers a revolving line of credit, but rather a short term line of credit like you see in business. Since they don't make any interest on their customers, they make up for it by charging a higher rate to the merchants. This is why a lot of places don't accept AMEX.

Right. But I believe nowadays AMEX also offers credit cards.

Utilities generally don't report to the credit bureaus unless it's bad news (your past due account being sold to collections).

Um, I basically give you props for being smart and you're dissapointed? :disgust:

I feel 100% justified to call stupid people slaves, at least in america. It's a fact of our political and ultra-capitalist society here, and in other countries too. The Mega-banks just find this credit-based system the most profitable biz model these days, much like the pharohs found the biz model of owning slaves outright more profitable back when he could whip them into submission.

I've been in both spots here, fully entrenched, and know exactly how hard it is to go from one to the other. -Not an education you can take classes for in schools here!

What exactly are you disappointed in?

I disagree that people with debt are dumb... You had debt, but weren't dumb because you had it and you were lucky and smart enough to get out of it.

Some people are in debt and cannot get out of it due to various circumstances (or plain bad luck) and not because they are dumb.

People in debt may be slaves to their debt yes, but dumb? Not quite IMO

I have two mortgages for two houses, both of them are rented out so the rent pays for the monthly installments. Credit card hits 30k/mo every month though, such is nature of our business.

A lot of them do around here. Some require you to request it but a lot of them will just do it.

Ah, I see your problem now.

At no point did I say having debt MAKES you dumb... I was saying that DUMB PEOPLE get enslaved.

It's not a 2-way street.

Are you a student? Last month I applied for student credit cards with Discover and Capital One as my first credit cards and I got accepted for both with ~$1,000 limits each. Student cards are meant for building credit, so they'll almost always accept you even if you have no credit history.

I pay my credit cards off every month, pay for tuition directly each month (no student loans), and I have never borrowed money, so I have $0 in debt.
