How much Gmail dependent is your business?

I've got tons of gmail accounts, which I open for any ad-hoc purpose there is - domain regs, hosting, adwords accounts etc
Basically for each new service I sign up, if I don't want to expose myself I just use a new gmail. Sure many ppl do the same.

Recently google started asking me for sms verification on new gmail accounts.

So made me think - maybe it's not such a good idea to base everything on gmail, since:

1. I don't want them to have my cell (which is uniquely identifiable)
2. Since all gmails redirect emails to my main gmail account, it's another possible link between adwords accounts which isn't a good thing (don't know if they use this info to link between AW accounts, but its possible).
3. Probably shitload of other stuff I didn't even think about.

Any thoughts on this?

How's your email infrastructure set up?
 


Either just keep trying till you get one that doesn't need SMS verification. Clear cookies, cache, etc. Or you can get it PVA'd with different numbers on each. Them niggas aren't gonna call you and have coffee convos. They just want text verification
 
I use google apps with a catch-all address. When signing up to a site such as say amazon, I'd make my email adress amazon@mydomain.com. It's easy to remember, and if a DB is hacked or my info is sold I know exactly which site is responsible. Plus I can always block a specific address if someone is pissing me off, or create as many addresses as I like for testing purposes.

Edit: Oh and it's great for a half second scammer check. If I get any emails from financial institutions I just check the to address.
 
uh, I use throwaway addresses from throwaway domains that are hosted on my servers.

for truly throwaway crap (like- dumb blogger aweber crap where they send download links immediately after confirmation I use mailinator.
 
It's seems you get the sms verification if either 1) your using a bot 2) your using an ip address outside of the states (even canada). You can get around it with the bot if you just slow down each field with about a 3 second delay.

This just based on my own experience. I don't make alot of gmail accounts maybe one every few days(so perhaps it would be different if you were making google accounts on a mass scale) , but I do have a bot for it because it's it's ridiculously tedious otherwise.
 
I use GMail, but have my own domain behind it and either forward all messages into GMail or do POP3/IMAP into Gmail and then use the "send as" feature. That way I can use GMail, but do not depend on it if it goes down or they close my account (for whatever reason that might be).

I also use Outlook to pull down all emails locally so if something happens to my Gmail account, I always have a copy.
 
it is recommended that if you value your privacy, you use anything other than gmail. sure it's convenient and works great but i'd rather not trust my life to these scary fucks.
 
I really can't see using Gmail for anything connected to the way I do business. Dealing with hosts, registrars, services providers, etc. - all kinds of correspondence containing IP addresses, domain names, outsourcing reports, etc. All of this contained within just the message content . If you use your Gmail account as a catch-all for the bullshit contact addresses for your domains/sites, go take a look at your complete message headers - all kinds of breadcrumbs in there to tie everything together.

Basically if you are gaming teh Googles at all with your strategies and for some reason they decide to sniff you out, they could most likely have some department do a little email forensics on your ass and have all your shit shut down in an afternoon.

For me it's Fastmail FTW. For $40/year it can accept mail for 50 domains and 500 aliases, not to mention all of the other features. Plus I can shut down all the mail services on my hosting to save resources. I could go on and on - pretty sweet.
 
If you have your own domains - what's the need for gmail? I'm not a big gmail user - but seems that just about everything in gmail can be done through outlook -- err windows live mail now.

With win 7 it will even track and keep conversations together.

Info domains are just a few bucks -- that money is easier to spend than to stress over pva's right?

sorry but this is pretty retarded. you can specify how much google sees, and it's ludicrous to suggest google is "sniffing out" black hat seo marketers by reading your gmail shit.

I really hope you're right, but I created this thread cause you might be wrong...

I'm paying much effort to differentiate between my stuff, especially adwords accounts, but since all gmail is funneled to one main account, this might be just something I left out in all my efforts, which could actually mean I can be shut down in an afternoon.
 
If you register to many gmail account through one IP one day, you will be asked to input mobile number to verify. you can try to use proxy to register gmail.
 
If I hadn't gotten an Adwords ban, I wouldnt give a fuck because GMail rocks - but now its Clicky for analytics, Thunderbird for email, and a completely separate machine for Adwords. Im sure they have the technology to put 2 and 2 together if youre using all their services.
 
The only thing I rely on Google for in my business is their search engine and I'm quickly moving away from relying even on that. They don't have others' best interests in mind in their business practices and their thirst for data is pretty far-reaching. They've certainly done nothing to hide either of those facts.

Thanks for the Fastmail suggestion. Lately, I asked myself more than just one time what I'd do if Gmail decided to randomly shut down my business account, with all the emails, logins, passwords, links, contacts etc. And their thirst for data really doesn't make me comfortable.

However I really like their clearly arranged interface, it's easy to find an email even though you have hundreds in your inbox, and the filter+differently colored labels rock as well. Does fastmail have similar features?

The interface is fairly minimalist. I don't think it has a label feature like GMail, however I just create relative folders and I can either create rules for certain mail to automatically be placed in these folders, or there is a check box next to each inbox message where I may select it and then just click on an arrow icon next to the appropriate folder in the folder pane to send it there.

Thanks for that pic, looks good. The label feature really sold me on Gmail but well, having none of them > Google sniffing around. Btw. does Fastmail also put together email conversations like Gmail does? I hope you know what I mean. Like that
